Hello DAM members and friends:
Below is a post that I made to the Leadership Listserve in response toLeaders continuing concerns over the proposed Alignment/Name Change for SLA. I wanted to share it with all of you as well. Please post comments here or on the DAM listserve (I will also post this there). Please remember that if you care about this professional association you MUST participate!!
"Thought I would add my 2cents worth as the leader of a Division that could be greatly impacted by the proposed Alignment. I am the co-chair for this year and the Chair-elect for 2010 of the Division of Advertising & Marketing (lovingly referred to as DAM). Why am I serving again, you may ask? Well, because NO ONE else stepped up. Our division is a small one, and frankly, does not have very many active members. One reason is that the Ad/Mktg biz has been hit hard by the economy. But, there are still a whole heck of a lot of people who work in market research and advertising who do the job that I do who ARE NOT librarians, and those people join other professional associations and discount our association because of a "perception" that we are all librarians. It is THOSE people that I want to bring into my division in order to grow our membership and our knowledge base. But, they will not come, if they are unable to identify with the name or the association.
Now, I LOVE being a librarian - but I choose to call myself a "librarian for the 21st century." That's because I embrace the old and the new. It keeps people asking me questions about what I do and gives me the opportunity to prove my overall value and show how my educational background can better inform my clients.
I'm excited for this alignment, but I know change is hard and scary. But, I do think it is time for us to pull our collective hair out of it's bun and toss off the glasses and embrace the next 100 years of our association, and not dismiss the incredible amount of time, care and effort that has been put in on this work by HQ and Leadership and Membership
There is simply no excuse for members to say that they have not heard about this Project. It is also inexcusable to complain and then not vote and not participate in discussions.
I salute this project!"

"Dominate" may be a slight exaggeration, but DAM members do represent in the September issue of Information Outlook.
On the Cover: Reece Dano, DAM Alignment Ambassador (See also the March, 2009 Issue for "10 Questions: Reece Dano)
Inside: Lynn Strand-Meyer, DAM Co-Chair, discusses her independent information business in the article "Taking a Non-Traditional Path."
Congratulations to Reece and Lynn for embracing the role of "The New Librarian" and sharing their experience and vast knowledge.

Hello DAM members!
I'd like to direct your attention to
a new resource: The
SLA Alignment Portal
This tool allows members to gain a deeper understanding of the Alignment
Project's findings and recommendations. It also serves as a knowledge repository,
a place for members to share their stories of how the alignment has helped
their careers and clients.
The portal is broken into five sections:
1. Explore -- Review the in-depth research.
2. Define -- Learn how the research
translates into a refined vision, mission, core values and more.
3. Express -- Access a range of communication
tools and resources.
4. Illustrate -- Bring consistency and
alignment to the association's visual identity. (Coming soon.)
5. Promote -- Work with our staff to
promote the association and the profession. (Coming soon.)
Take a look at it and let us know what you think.
Also, SLA President Gloria Zamora and President- Elect Anne Caputo presented their take on the Alignment Project at the D.C. Chapter meeting in May. Their slide deck provides a direct and insightful assessment of the project.:
http://www.sla.org/
Again, please feel free to share your thoughts about the Alignment Project with me -- positive or negative. I'd love to pass them on the project leaders.
Best regards,
Reece

Hi all DAM folk!
Just received from the Alightment Team the PPT:
" Positioning Information Professionals for the Future is an easy-to-understand presentation that neatly and succinctly summarizes the major findings from the evidence-based alignment research. It practically runs itself so you can easily share it at a Chapter event, board meeting or via your division website. (Since it is large PDF, here is a tip for printing: From your Print dialog box, click on the Advanced button in the lower left, check the "Print as image" box then click Okay.) "
Use it to promote value and change!
Thanks SLA!

DAM Shout Out #5
Happy July!! Hope you are looking forward to a long weekend to celebrate The USA’s Birthday! If you are one of our international members, hope your summer or winter is going great!
Speaking of celebrations ….
I’m exhausted, inspired, elated and encouraged after attending SLA’s Centennial Celebration!
Our Division put on a seriously awesome slate of sessions. Here’s a little recap:
Our little orange DAM buttons could be seen around the convention center (email me if you want me to snail mail you one!) Our tweets were seen on the big screen in the INFO/EXPO, our display in the Idea Showcase was very well received.
Our Board meeting was an excellent brainstorming session and we have lots of new ideas for the division, we will keep you posted!
Our Business meeting – sponsored by WARC – was delicious, despite the early hour! We met some great new members and encouraged a few others to jump on board the DAMwagon! Also, congrats to Jen Hahs, our Award of Merit 2009 winner!
The Roundtable – sponsored by Proquest – was once again a lively and interactive learning session. Our RT is a time honored DAM tradition. Love it!
The FAN/DAM luncheon about Food’s Future was a great success. Member Joan Leake from CMI did a fantastic presentation, her resource list was worth its weight in gold!
Onion Editor Calls For An End to Reading – HUGE success! Folks were out the door! Check out a picture of the SRO crowd on our blog http://units.sla.org/division/dam/!
Not Your Grandmother’s Census – sponsored by SimplyMap – also a great success, with some very valuable info.
I’m Not Cheap - Just Cost Conscious – sponsored by AdData - with Marcy Phelps was a terrific way to end our DAM sessions. Marcy is always an engaging speaker and her presentation was chock full of great resources, tips & ideas!
Well, that’s enough of SLA 2009 …. J
Let’s start planning for SLA 2010 in New Orleans! Let The Good Times Roll!
Hey, did someone say DAM Dance Party???

Couldn't make it to DC? Missed a session? Didn't get a handout?
Check out the posted conference presentations and handouts on the SLA website.
