Social Science Division Nominations for Elected Officers

As your 2010 Nominations Chair, I am very pleased to announce the following slate of candidates for next year:

 

Treasurer/Secretary:  Kadri Kallikorm-Rhodes

Chair-elect:  Brandy King

 

Both Kadri and Brandy are well known to the Board and to many of our members.  Here is a snapshot of their backgrounds and credentials. I thank them both dearly for their ongoing commitment to the division and willingness to serve in these two vital positions!

 

Kadri Kallikorm-Rhodes has been serving as our division’s discussion list manager since 2007. She has been active in the Princeton-Trenton Chapter of SLA and the Rutgers Special Libraries Association.  Currently, she is a Senior Librarian at Mathematica Policy Research in Princeton, New Jersey and was previously a library instructor at Rutgers University. She received her undergraduate degrees in Estonia and a business law degree in Paris, France prior to getting her M.L.I.S. degree at Rutgers.  She has held professional positions for the EU in both Estonia and Brussels. We are delighted to have her working with us in the capacity of Treasurer/Secretary. Luckily, our outgoing Treasurer, Jan Watterworth, also works at Mathematica Policy Research and has kindly agreed to mentor Kadri for her new role.

 

Brandy King has been serving as our division’s webmaster since 2005. She is a Librarian/Information Specialist at the Center on Media and Child Health in Boston, Massachusetts where she created and maintains databases of all extant literature on media and children’s health.  SLA awarded Brandy the Innovations in Technology Award in 2005 and featured her in an article for Information Outlook in 2007. In 2009, she received a Professional Award from the Massachusetts Association of Health Sciences Library Network.  She received her undergraduate degree at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and her M.L.I.S. from Simmons College in Boston.  Brandy has lectured and written widely on the subject of ontologies and semantic search and co-authored a book, Finding the Concept, Not Just the Word: Ontologies and Semantics for Librarians, published by Chandos Publishing in 2008. We are thrilled to have Brandy serve as incoming Chair-elect for 2011 when she will work side by side with Tara Murray, our Chair for 2011.

 

Additional nominations, if any, for these elected offices should be submitted to Iris Anderson in writing. Subject to further nominations submitted up to 30 days prior to or coming from the floor at our annual  business meeting on June14, 2010, these two candidates will be approved by the membership.

Call for Posters for 2010 SLA Annual Conference, New Orleans, LA

How Info Pros Use Social Media and/or Social Events to Reach Out to New Clients

The Academic; Education; Museums, Arts, & Humanities; and Social Science Divisions of SLA invite proposals for a poster session to be held during the divisions’ Poster Session and Open House at SLA 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Poster Session and Open House will be held on Monday, June 14 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at The Historic New Orleans Collections, 533 Royal Street in the historic French Quarter.

In keeping with the SLA 2010 conference theme, "Entering SLA's Next Century: Let the Good Times Roll," the theme for the poster session is "How Info Pros Use Social Media and/or Social Events ['the good times'] to Reach Out to New Clients." Proposals should focus on the use of social media and social events in libraries or information work. Posters may include examples of social media tools in use, innovative ideas for future uses, comparisons of available tools, descriptions of successful social events, or any other idea relevant to the theme.

The poster session will be a relaxed and informal time to share ideas with your colleagues. We welcome proposals from any SLA member, new or experienced, and especially from students. In the event we receive more qualified submissions than we can accommodate, members of the four sponsoring divisions and student members will be given priority.

Proposals should be submitted by May 1, 2010 via e-mail to lyleminter@yahoo.com or mail to Lyle Minter, 3137 Eakin Park Court, Fairfax, VA 22031 USA. Please include a title and description of about 250 words, and your name, institution, e-mail address, and address. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee for relevance to the theme and quality. We will notify applicants of our decision by May 10, 2010.

Annual Conference Programs for Wednesday, June 16

Join us in this session on Grants Librarianship as we focus on strategies for marketing services as a grants librarian and integrate services with university/organization practices. Speakers will discuss outreach, coordination of funding opportunities, and elements of a successful grant application.  This morning’s session includes coffee and donuts (while supplies last)!

For the real history of prostitution in New Orleans, including references to correctional girls, casket girls, quadroon balls, red light areas prior to Storyville, prominent personalities, The Blue Books, jazz, and the demise of Storyville, attend this lively preserntation. A ticketed lunch and tour of Williams Research Center will follow. (See schedule 12:00 – 1:30.)

A light lunch overlooking the garden of The Historic New Orleans Collection in the French Quarter will be followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of the conservation,  preservation, and research arms of HNOC. The tour will feature maps, documents, archaeology, and architecture. Lunch will be served at 11:30, immediately following the Pamela Arceneaux presentation (see above).
