SLA Government Information Division: The Economist Covers Libraries: Digital Preservation and E-gov Access

Library topics rarely make it into The Economist.com, but we have two October articles to cite:

Born digital: National libraries start to preserve the web, but cannot save everything, 21 October 2010. "The task started before standards, goals or budgets are set. And they may yet change. Just like many websites, libraries will be stuck in what is known as 'permanent beta'."
The librarian's tale: Too much demand for too few terminals, 21 October 2010. "Nationally (U.S.), the number of libraries reporting that they help patrons with e-government services has risen by almost half."

Each has generated comments.

The SLA Government Information Division is comprised of information professionals from a wide variety of careers. Members include librarians that work for state, federal, provincial, and international government organizations as well as librarians working in colleges, companies and organizations.
Government information is unique in that while usually free, it is critical that the organizations that create it understand how it will be used by citizens and stakeholders everywhere.
