This week will see the introduction of two important government spending proposals.
The White House is due to release the President's fiscal year 2012 (October 2011-October 2012) budget proposal on the morning of Monday, February 14th. The budget documents will be available on the White House Office of Management and Budget website (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb or http://www.budget.gov) and on the Government Printing Office FDsys.gov website.(FDsys.gov also has the texts of the President's budget proposal back to FY1996.)
In addition to providing free access on FDsys.gov, GPO is selling print editions and a CD-ROM version (includes many tables in spreadsheet format) via the online bookstore budget section. GPO has posted a budget documents fact sheet [PDF] about the four-volume FY2012 release.
The second important proposal of the week comes from the House of Representatives, where appropriations bills originate. Congress has not passed full appropriations for the current fiscal year, FY2011. Instead, the government has been funded by a series of short-term continuing resolutions*. Federal government operations are currently funded to March 4, 2011. House leadership plans to move forward this week with a bill, H.R. 1, funding the government for the remainder of the fiscal year. The full text of H.R. 1 with supplementary information is available now on the House Rules Committee website. Additional information is provided in the House Appropriations Committee's February 10th press release.
*For more information on continuing resolutions, see the Congressional Research Service report Continuing Resolutions: Latest Action and Brief Overview of Recent Practices.
Tip: THOMAS.gov tracks appropriations bills and continuing resolutions in the Status of Appropriations Legislation Chart.
