The IT division is seeking content for its publication, b/ITe.  The next deadline for articles is November 20.  If you are interested in contributing, please contact Patty Phipps (patty dot phipps at library dot gatech dot edu).  Contributing to b/ITe is a great way to become active in the division and share your thoughts with others.

Newsroom wikis

I posted a recap of that SLA session on the Information Technology blog.

What?! You didn't know the Information Techonology had a blog? Well yes, this new baby saw birth just before the annual conference. It's a great place to get the latest info about the Division and other topics that interest us. Happy reading!

CE class at SLA Baltimore and Get-Together

Unfortunately, the CE class I was going to teach on Sunday June 11th, "Continuing Education Course- Weblogging for Beginners: A Practical Approach", was cancelled due to low number of registrations. It's just too bad because we were going to have hands-on activities for the participants. I guess the incredibly high prices for the equipment and Internet access, forcing us to put a higher price on the class registration, did us in...

But fear not, the Webloggers Get-Together is still on! See you there!

Technical Support Roundtable at SLA2006

At SLA2006 in Baltimore, we're attempting some new kinds of programming referred to by the program planners as "horizon programming."  We've been working on these horizon programs for some time, so it has been very refreshing and reassuring to see some discussion about running unconference programming lately.  In my mind, the horizon programs planned by the IT division are definitely in the spirit of the unconference.

As a manager of a desktop support unit, I've always wanted more programming where I could talk to others who also manage computers in some capacity.  Are you using an enterprise spyware solution or just sticking to standalone Spybot?  Have you tried wireless barcode readers?  Have you set up a blog for technical support issues?  How are you utilizing handheld computers?  That kind of thing.

I talk to people informally, of course, and I find that a number of information professionals manage computers in addition to doing many other things.  You don't have to be manager of a desktop support unit in order to have the same issues that I do.

With that in mind, I'm leading a discussion of technical support issues at SLA2006.  If you're interested, I hope that you'll be there.  Please spread the word to others who might be interested in participating in this open discussion.

SLA Election Results Announced

The SLA Election results are in and congratulations are in order!  Two of our new board members are IT division members: President-Elect Stephen Abram and Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect Libby Trudell.  Libby is currently serving as the division's Public Relations Chair.  Congratulations to all the candidates for their willingness to participate and for their contributions to the organization and the profession.  This is really a great group of people, and I'm glad to be a part of SLA.

SLA Baltimore Conference Program Now Available

The SLA Baltimore conference online planner is now available.  There are a number of interesting programs lined up for Baltimore (and a little advertising here: I especially encourage you to check out all of the IT division programs--our own Catherine will be teaching a continuing education course, Weblogging for Beginners).

Check it out, and don't forget that conference registration rates increase on May 1.

Board of Directors vote

Voting starts today to elect SLA's new Board of Directors. If you have an electronic email address on file with the association, you should receive information to access your electronic ballot today. If no email is on file, you have, or will soon, received a printed ballot by mail.

As mentioned before, several IT members are candidates. So vote early, but vote only once :)

Thursday evening, Houston meeting

Well, the Texas Chapter sure can put up a nice reception!Great view up the top of a nearby hotel, great food and a nice opportunity to meet other information professionals.

While there, I met Marydee Ojala, editor of Online Magazine. Marydee is blogging about the meeting over at the Online Insider blog.

Tomorrow is "association" day. One of the highlights will be the luncheon with the various candidates for the SLA board. Among them, several IT members: Baltimore planner James Manasco and Libby Truddell who are running both for Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect; Blogging Section member Dav Robertson and Stephen Abram both for President-Elect; “Buzzy” Basch  for Treasurer and LaJean Humphries for Director.

CORRECTION: I failed to mention that Libby Truddell, candidate for Chapter Cabinet Chair, is the Chair of the IT division's Public Relations Committee. My apologies for the omission.

Off to Houston

I'm off this morning to Houston to the SLA Leadership Meeting. It will be my first winter meeting, and it is as chair of the Section. If Section members are going to be present in Houston, please look me up. It will be my pleasure to meet you!
