IM in the workplace

An article in the New York Times Technology section provides insight on how employees view the use of instant messaging within the workplace.  A study conducted by Ohio State University and the University of California find that employees find IM less intrusive than other means of communication.  While this technology may increase the number of communications, the conversations tend to be shorter.  Also, by stating your status as busy or free, it serves as a handy tool to indicate whether an employee is open to interruption.

People always ignore my status when I'm at work.
