The response to MAHD's call for volunteers has been strong, but we can accommodate still more able spine labelers at the LA Historical Center Library. Please share this with your members.
Library tech services volunteers needed in New Orleans, Saturday and/or Thursday, mornings and/or afternoons bracketing the SLA Annual Conference!
Where: The Louisiana Historical Center Library (part of the Louisiana State Museum), in the French Quarter at the Old US Mint. You'll be treated like family: come to the back door of the Mint, 400 Esplanade Avenue.
What: Create and apply spine labels for a heavily used reference collection; de-shelve and re-shelve; operate book cart shuttles; type; assemble; meet new people; handle old books!
When: Sat., June 12 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and/or 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Thur., June 17 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and/or 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Why: This collection of about 2,000 titles was safely removed from New Orleans and returned after Katrina, but on reshelving was found to be in great need of the simple organizational aid of readable spine labels. We can do this! We are Librarians, hear us roar!
Who: SLA members and their guests desiring a service project that will positively impact the city and state but in a way that doesn’t involve hammer and nails.
How much: No charge
What else: Bring a laptop if possible.
Nearby restaurants include Louisiana Pizza Kitchen, Cafe Envie and Mona's.
Museum is in easy walking distance or cab ride from conference hotels.
We WILL NOT be required to submit a Request for Criminal History form, as earlier noted.
RSVP to Eliza erobertson@nationalhumanitiescenter.org, Museums, Arts & Humanities Division Chair, 2010
