A $10,000 scholarship for blogging

A recent post on the Read/WriteWeb site provides details about a $10,000 scholarship available for college bloggers.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution.  The blog must contain unique and interesting things about the blogger or posts on things that s/he is passionate about.  The submission deadline is October 6th.

This would be a great tool to open up a discussion with the young people you know about the benefits of blogging.  If for nothing else, the scholarship serves as a strong motivator for students to start their own blog.

Guarding your post: Content scraping

With a recent article on the CNET new site, readers can learn more about content scraping and get tips from a blogger who has come up with her own solutions to protect her content.  Lorelle VanFossen, the author of a popular blog, has seen her content copied on "scraper sites".  These sites utilize bots that can scrape content at the rate of thousands of posts per hour.  This content is then used to attract visitors to their site in order to generate ad revenue for the site owner.

SezWho: Earning your online reputation

A post on the Read/WriteWeb blog introduces a new tool that brings reputation, comment rating, and filtering to online social media.  Created by Jitendra Gupta, SezWho rewards quality content contributors and helps readers find quality content.  Contributing content to blogs, wikis and discussion boards helps you earn your online reputation.  Readers are empowered because they get to vote on the quality of the contribution thereby affecting the contributor's score.  You can access the SezWho FAQ here

Bloggers Get-Together

I just came back from the Bloggers Get Together, set up by the Blogging Section. Thirteen bloggers attended under the thankfully-reappeared Baltimore sun. A list of attendees and hopefully some pictures should appear soon on the Blogging Section blog. Thanks to all who attended, who was great to see "old" faces and meet new people.

Bloggers Get-Together in Baltimore

The Blogging Section invites all bloggers and those interested in blogging to join us for a get-together at the Annual Conference in Baltimore. On Monday, June 12th, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, we will meet at Edgar's Billiards Club & Restaurant (htt://www.edgarsclub.com) on the outdoor patio. Look for the sign "SLA Bloggers Get-Together". Restaurant and bar service will be available for you to order refreshments (each pay his/her own). A pool table will be reserved inside for us.

Edgar's offers 10% off the tab for conventioneers so don't forget to bring your conference badge with you. The club is conveniently located between the Baltimore Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency on the Baltimore Inner Harbor Skywalk, above Pratt and Light streets.

Even if you are not a member of the Section, or even the IT Division, we would love to meet you. So, come relax, practice your eight-ball and talk about blogging with us!

P.S. Don't forget to check out the Blogging Section Blog too!
