Leap Day (2/29) Business Meeting

Hello Kentucky Chapter!

Our February Business Meeting is approaching quickly so I'm going to take this chance to fill you all in on the details of that event.

For this meeting we will be using SurveyMonkey to RSVP.  You must use this link to let us know you plan to attend: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=9nkhwC0h_2fyfWoMvLXR8IXw_3d_3d.

More meeting details are also available below.

The meeting will be on February 29 at Hall's on the River in Winchester, KY.  Since we will be in Winchester, home of the Ale-8 bottling plant, we will be starting the day off with a tour of Ale-8 beginning promptly at 10:50 AM.  I've Google Mapped the location of Ale-8 here: http://tinyurl.com/2t8an3.

After the tour we will meet for lunch at Hall's on the River at 12:30 PM for our business meeting and a speaker.  Directions to Hall's can be found here: http://www.hallsontheriver.com/directions.php.  The meeting fee will be $15 for members, $25 for nonmembers and $5 for students.  This does not include lunch, which we will all pay for individually.

Emily Hicks from the University of Dayton will be speaking on Generations in Libraries.  Here is an overview of that talk:

Today’s libraries employ four generations of workers with diverse worldviews, work philosophies, and life experiences. Hicks will explore characteristics of each generation and the impact they have on workplace values, on-the-job strengths, and expectations, and provide insights into each generation to assist managers and others. Diversity and generational gaps at the workplace with real-world examples from libraries will be discussed.

Hope to see you all there!

Second Life Presentation and Business Meeting 11/16/07

The Kentucky Chapter of SLA will be holding its next meeting on Friday, November 16.  The first part of the meeting will be a lunch and business meeting at Ramsey's Diner (496 East High Street, Lexington, KY 40507) at 12 Noon.  The second part of our meeting will be a Second Life demonstration and hands on workshop presented by the University of Kentucky's Beth Kraemer who has just been written up for working on the Teen Second Life College Fair (http://news.uky.edu/news/display_article.php?artid=2812).  The Second Life portion of the meeting will take place in room B-35 in the  lower level of the University of Kentucky's W.T. Young Library.  Driving directions to Young Library can be found here: http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/page.php?lweb_id=25.  B-35 is located within The Hub @ WT's (http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/hub) so you can stop by and see what our own Stacey Greenwell has been doing there to make the area a more exciting and attractive student space.

The meeting fee will be $20 for KYSLA chapter members, $10 for student members, and $30 for nonmembers.  Please RSVP by email to Alex Grigg (agrigg@lexmark.com) by 11/9/07 and send a check for the meeting fee by that same date to:

You can skip this paragraph if you're used to the parking around UK, but for everyone else I'll give some specifics on the "challenge" of parking near UK.  First of all, Ramsey's has some available free parking.  If you continue past Ramsey's on E. High St, (it's a one way street so you'll be heading NW) there is some parking available on the left and it is pretty well marked by Ramsey's.  Also, Ramsey's and Young Library are only a little over .5 miles apart so if you want to use the pay parking lot outside of Young (it is the gated lot on Hilltop Ave.) that is a viable option.  I'll be walking over from Young at around 11:30 AM so let me know if you'd like to join me.  If the Young pay lot is full, there are several other campus parking structures with pay lots (http://www.uky.edu/Parking/parking-lots-structures.html) but none of them are terribly close to the library.  Street parking is also possible in the area if you're willing to give yourself a lot of walking time and are willing to do battle with students looking for spaces.

For those of you who will be attending the Second Life presentation, it will be quite helpful if you can set up a Second Life account before coming to the meeting.  Second Life can stop you from creating a new account if it sees too many new IDs coming from the same place, such as the one room where we will be sitting.  To create a new account start at this site and follow the instructions below:

http://secondlife.com/

Choose the "join" link in the upper right to create the account.  You need to choose a unique name.  The last name is chosen from a list in the drop box.  The first name can be anything.  The name is case sensitive.  The combination must be unique in the Second Life system.  Choose something you can live with!  Your name is the only thing about your Second Life that you can't change later.  Bring your name and password with you to the session.

This has turned into quite a lengthy announcement so I'm going to cut it off here, but feel free to contact me (agrigg@lexmark.com) if you have any additional questions about the meeting.

Thanks and I hope to see you there!

May Social Outing at Smith-Berry Winery

My thanks to Jo Staggs-Neel for the listserv announcement which I will now be stealing from for this post:

Are you longing to gather with your SLA buddies and make a toast to springtime in Kentucky?

On Friday, May 11th we'll be gathering at the Smith-Berry Winery in New Castle, Kentucky (Henry County) for a 3:00 wine tasting, followed by a tour of the winery and time to visit the gift shop or take a leisurely stroll through the vineyard. And, to cap off a beautiful afternoon, those interested will meet for dinner at the Science Hill Inn in Shelbyville (only 17 miles away).

So, check your calendar, and join us for an afternoon at the vineyard!

Email me (agrigg@lexmark.com) or respond to Jo's email if you're planning on joining us for dinner at the Science Hill Inn.  That way we can reserve enough space for everyone.

Directions to Smith-Berry are available here:

http://www.smithberrywinery.net/directions.htm

I hope to see everyone at this fun and free event!

More Specifics on the Feb. 23 Meeting

There have been a few questions regarding our speaker, Dr. Woody Berry, and the menu at Malone's.  This Jan Berry's short bio of Dr. Berry that also includes a little more information on his presentation topic:

Dr. Woody Berry is the senior minister at Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church in Lexington.  He been a Presbyterian minister for 30 years, and has served congregations in Kentucky, Texas, and Colorado.  His publications include curricula for the Presbyterian Church, and he is nationally known for his course on Human Sexuality for children, youth, and their parents.  He serves on the board of Planned Parenthood-Lexington, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, and BUILD (an interfaith justice ministry in downtown Lexington).

Woody’s educational background includes a B.A. in English from The University of Texas at Austin.  His Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees are from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.  His Ph.D. work, at UT-Austin, is in the area of Curriculum and Instruction.  He has also been an Instructor and Adjunct Faculty member at Austin Seminary.

The workshop he will lead for us centers on the group dynamics of inclusion.  You will learn what you need to be included and empowered in a group, as well as what you can do to include and empower others.  This information will enable you to improve your effectiveness on teams, such as in your work place, home, or community.  Woody has presented this workshop for several groups including the Scientific and Technical Information Center at NASA/Johnson Space Center and the Board of Directors of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

The menu at Malone's includes a side item, a "Lexingtonian wedge salad," dessert, and a non-alcoholic drink.  Everyone gets a choice of these main dishes:

Herb Roasted Chicken Caesar Salad
Four Cheese Ravioli
Teriyaki Pork Chop
BBQ Chicken
Grilled Salmon
Crab Cake

Or for an additional $5.00 (not included in registration fee):

Prime Sirloin Steak
Bacon Wrapped Filet Medallions

I'm a fan of Malone's and they tend to specialize in steak so I'll probably spend the extra $5 on the sirloin or filet's.  I hope to see you all there.

Leadership Summit 2008

Kentucky Chapter to Host Leadership Summit 2008

Once again the Kentucky Chapter is playing a major role in SLA events.  SLA realizes that all members, even small chapters make an impact on the organization.  The Kentucky Chapter first came to the attention of a broad spectrum of SLA members with our work on the Dues Proposal

Now, we will be home to the SLA Leadership Summit in 2008.  Chapter members prepare.  We will have a lot of work to do to make sure that our fellow SLA members know that while Kentuckians have a great time in other cities; we will have a better time showing them how to enjoy Louisville.

Fun and leadership do go together.  Louisville is home to the Derby, the 2007 Orange Bowl Champions, the Slugger, and ALI. In January 2008 we will be home to SLA.  Let's roll out the welcome mat and show our organization just how well leadership and fun go together.

Or as they say in the IT Division "Let's get this party started."

Collaborate & Innovate 2006

I hope everyone is geared up and registered for this exciting one day conference.

I personally am looking forward to hearing Eeva Hoch's comments on competitive intelligence.  I also suspect that the Creative Conflict Resolution Workshop by Susan Freeman, our Keynote, will be extremely useful.

Of course, the best part of the day, will be our ability to network, not only with our Kentucky Chapter members, but also our Cincinnati colleagues and those other folks from the special library world.  Who knows, we may even, win over a few new members.

If you need registration and/or schedule information feel free to drop me an email.

Webcast: Extending Your Library's Presence Online

This sounds like an interesting session.  For more information, check out the writeup on Beyond the Job.

Blended Librarian Webcast: Conversations With Patrons: Extending Your Library’s Presence Online

Steven Bell and John Shank, co-founders of the Blended Librarians Online Learning Community, and their guest Brian Mathews, Public Services Librarian at the Georgia Institute of Technology invite you to join the next Blended Librarian community event, "Conversations With Patrons: Extending Your Library’s Presence Online” On Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 2 pm. EST.

Event Description:
Google, Google Scholar and Wikipedia are emerging as favorite research designations among undergraduate students, while library resource usage seems marginalized. Is it really easier for students to find what they need on those free Internet sites? Where do they turn for help? How can libraries increase usage and relevancy? Are there new modes of instruction effective for the Net Generation? This talk explores the social nature of the web and advocates using social networking sites and student blogs to better understand and assist patrons. Blended Librarians need to add Web 2.0 technologies to their skill set, and this presentation will help get you started. Included will be strategies for assessment, marketing, reference assistance, and instructional opportunities. Find out how to expand your library’s web presence and interact more directly with students.

SLA Leadership Summit in January

The SLA Leadership Summit will be held in Reno, NV, January 24-27, 2007.  I've attended this meeting for several years now and have found it to be an invigorating and energizing experience.  The speakers are usually top-notch, the leadership activities really get you thinking, and the networking can't be beat.  This is a very small meeting, so it's easy to chat with anyone, including the SLA Board of Directors.
