Following on the heels of a successful February networking
session, the SLA student group at the University of Maryland’s iSchool held its
second workshop of the semester on March 27.
Led by Kathleen Schmidt, a recruiter from Library Associates Companies,
this workshop focused on creating effective resumes. Schmidt, who graciously flew in from Vermont
for the event, conducted an engaging session with 12 members of the student
group and faculty advisor Trudi Hahn.
The session began with each group member sharing her own work background and resume-writing concerns. Schmidt addressed each member’s questions thoughtfully, and as the workshop progressed, a more informal discussion developed with group members sharing their own tips.
Some of the suggestions discussed included
making the resume a priority rather than the cover letter, reading the resume
aloud to evaluate it, and using terms from the job posting in the resume. Schmidt also recommended that librarians
become familiar with the terminology of the business world, emphasizing that an
understanding of business principles can make a candidate stand out from her
competitors.
The SLA student group’s third and final workshop of the semester will be held in May and will address interviewing techniques.
