On May 13, about fifty Maryland Chapter members and professional
colleagues convened at the University of Maryland Shady Grove Campus to seize a
unique opportunity to learn new tips at the professional development event Presentation and Instructional Design: Polishing Skills & Learning New Tricks.
Presenters Mary Ann Kmetyk, Principal and founding partner at Applied
Performance Strategies, Inc., and Joan Weeks, Senior Instruction Librarian in
the Instructional Design and Training Division of the Library of Congress,
shared their expertise about confidently speaking, effectively engaging the
audience, and designing instruction for various learning types and media. There
were tips, tools, and techniques for attendees to take away from this chapter
event!
Mary Ann Kmetyk, who provides training and consulting services in the areas of leadership development, performance management, team implementation, communications skills and effective human resource practices, defines a presentation as “the preparation and delivery of essential formation in a logical, succinct manner leading to productive results.” She covered six steps in preparing an effective presentation in her talk entitled Effective Presentation Skills, along with techniques to connect with an audience. Mary Ann stressed that practice and self-evaluation are key to effectively present and recommended that we practice our presentations and speeches out loud. She also told us that if we can engage our audiences and get through the first three minutes of our presentations perfectly, they are likely to overlook any mistakes we may make later!
Joan Weeks, who creates training materials, conducts webinars, and instructs library staff in the Integrated Library System (ILS), cataloging, and library processing workflows, gave a presentation called The Mixing Bowl: Adding the Best Ingredients for Successful Instruction. She discussed the popular ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) Model for instructional design and covered learning theories and teaching methods and demonstrated how they applied to library instruction. Joan also talked about various modes of instruction, including those that best meet the needs of diverse, multicultural audiences.
Attendees enjoyed a delicious light meal while they learned at the Conference Center on the beautiful Universities of Shady Grove campus in Rockville – what a stunning venue for a learning event! The Maryland Chapter sends a big thank you to Thomson Reuters for helping sponsor this event!
Feedback from the Presentation & Instructional Design event was very positive and lucky raffle winner Nedelina Tchangalova won a $15 iTunes gift card, a very nice takeaway, indeed!
