RSS Primer

A frequent request from members is to learn about technology tools, particularly those that can be used by anyone with a Web browser (because some companies disallow downloading applications, or even visiting social networking sites such as Facebook).

RSS is a basic technology for keeping up to date with most public Web sites, and pretty much all blogs. In fact, you could debate if it's a blog if there's no RSS component.

RSS Feeds: Managing the Mechanism provides a very clear intro to the technology -- and its usefulness -- with the info pro in mind. Another great thing about RSS: Generally, no registration is involved. True, you'll need to register to download an RSS reader from Google, Netvibes, NewsGator or some other place. But then you won't have to tell the Web site you're visiting your email or get a username and password. (Certain sites may require you to log in to view the content you receive via the RSS feed.)

The cited article comes from the site FUMSI - Helping You Find, Use, Manage and Share Information. FUMSI is part of the FreePint family of resources (most are free) "to help information workers be more effective, raise the value of information in their organisations and contribute to success."

And remember, SLA's Innovation Lab is a terrific resource for learning technology that can make a difference in your work life and career.

SLA Considers Creating Academic Division

SLA is considering creating an Academic Division. Please see the proposal below, sent July 24 from Linda N. Broussard, Chief Community Officer:

One of SLA’s greatest strengths is in its divisions, a valuable network rich with subject expertise and outstanding subject-specific programming.  However, many academic members also need more generalized content, germane to the academic institutions which they serve.  This often requires attendance at other conferences such as ALA and ACRL.  In today’s challenging economic environment, it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify additional professional memberships and attendance at multiple conferences.  SLA academic subject librarians obviously consider SLA attendance a must; however, many are feeling increased pressure, often from non-SLA member colleagues and supervisors, to attend more general conferences for professional development concerning academic library issues.  Likewise, some SLA division leaders feel compelled to offer more generalized programming focused on academic library issues to meet this acknowledged need, but those programs are offered at the expense of valuable subject-specific programs, something which SLA should never lose.

Creating a new Academic Division would provide an appropriate venue for the type of programming necessary to support our academic members, as well as providing a strong incentive to recruit non-members to join SLA.   If you are interested in joining this new division, please indicate by signing our electronic petition.  There you will find the scope note for the proposed new division.  Stacey Greenwell is the interim chair of the new division and you may contact her with questions.

Division Cabinet Chair Robyn Frank and Division Cabinet Chair-Elect Tom Rink have reviewed and support this new division.  If you have comments, please contact them.

SLA Candidates Address Misperceptions of Info Pros

The candidates for SLA offices and director positions now have two sets of videos online: their bios and stump speeches, posted several weeks ago, and newly posted videos on YouTube addressing the question, "If you could change one misperception about librarians and information professionals, what would it be?" (You don't need to sign up for YouTube; just click the links from the page linked above.)

Comments on SLA President-Elect Candidates

On July 4, I challenged SLA members to view the videos of the candidates for 2009 SLA offices. Slowly but surely I'm watching them myself.

As promised, below are some notes on the two candidates for president-elect, from their eight-minute videos.

Don't forget to stop by the SLA-NY Happy Hour if you're in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday evening, July 29. It's your chance to meet the candidates.

Janice Anderson is the founder, CEO and board chair for Access Sciences Corporation in Houston. We as SLA members and as an organization have several choices for the future, she said. Among those are “So Long Ago,” focusing on the past. Other choices are “Search, Locate, Analyze” and “Seek, Learn, Apply.” Anderson, though, recommends that SLA should mean “So Let’s Anticipate (Agree, Act, Advocate and Achieve) all we can be in the 21st Century.”

Anne Caputo is Executive Director of Dow Jones' Learning & Information Professional Programs; she also serves on the faculty or adjunct faculty at information schools of the University of Maryland and University of Tennessee. Caputo chose “the power of groups and instruments together” to symbolize the strength and building blocks for SLA. In her car stereo, Caputo listens to a wide variety of music, from classical to country. When a friend asked the common thread, she later came to realize that all the musicians were part of groups, not soloists. “Sometimes one voice takes the lead and sometimes the harmony is very close,” Caputo said. “Often we sing in one language, often we sing in multiple languages.”

Take Two Hours to Decide the Future of SLA

I'm asking you to take about two hours of time in the next two months to become smart voters choosing the next leaders of SLA.

You'll find online biographies and candidate speeches for the candidates for President-Elect, Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect, Division Cabinet Chair-Elect and Director. The candidate speeches are WMV files, each lasting about eight minutes. Eighty minutes, plus 30 minutes reading and digesting the biographies, plus a few minutes to spare ... that's two hours, and you can break it up however you like in the next two months.

Voting will take place electronically, likely in September. The candidates were scheduled to speak to SLA member voters at the annual conference in Seattle, but only a small audience was present. However, the speeches are available online for all to review.

Today I viewed the videos for the candidates for President-Elect, Janice C. Anderson and Anne Caputo, and I'll make sure to view the others soon. I'll also post to the blog, a positive comment about each candidate. Please post as comments to this blog any questions you have about the election or the election process. Or email Barbara Burton and me at newjersey.sla AT gmail.com and we'll get your questions answered.

Happy Fourth!
