As the Head of Library Information Transfer Services, this person is responsible for the day-to-day management of circulation, course reserves, and interlibrary loan services employees and services. The unit head also manages the systems that support library functions, including assisting library staff in the use of library technologies, desktop applications, and web resources. As a member of the management group, the incumbent is integral to the decision-making processes and the key contributor of information, advice and expertise on emerging technologies. The unit head provides leadership in addressing the library system needs across the library functional areas including access, collections, and public services. The incumbent manages the integrated library system (ILS, currently Innovative Interfaces - Millennium) in coordination with the vendor and the Colleges’ OIT office. The person in this position is chair of the library Website Committee and works with the committee to plan development of the website. While some updates are distributed to staff, this person also has overall responsibility for maintaining the library’s web site to enhance delivery of information and services. On an as-needed basis, the incumbent develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures for the orderly operation of the library.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
• Management of day-to-day operations of the Library Systems and Information Transfer Services Unit and supervision of unit employees including professional, paraprofessional, and student staffs.
• Developing planning, policies, and procedures as they relate to the functional areas within library systems and information transfer services.
• Full participation in the Trexler Library Management Group and appropriately assigned organizations across the college.
• Statistical reporting and recommendation development on library systems and information transfer services matters.
• Developing and monitoring library systems and information transfer services policies.
• Specific activities relating to library systems management include the following:
o Supervision of upgrades and maintenance on all modules of the ILS, whether hands-on or acting as liaison with the vendor to solve problems and implement new services.
o Supervising the loading and processing of electronic files such as those from III and McNaughton.
o Directly providing the development, maintenance, and security of the library’s web site and assisting library staff in authoring of distributed pages while also establishing and maintaining primary library web pages.
o Collecting statistics on library system and web site usage.
o Management of codes, loan rules, and circulation data for lending services.
o Recommending and facilitating software and hardware upgrades, including those for OCLC interlibrary loan and cataloging services and hardware upgrades to public workstations throughout the library.
o Maintaining an equipment inventory.
o Acting as the library’s primary liaison with OCLC.
o Acting as the library’s primary liaison with Muhlenberg College Office of Information Technology (OIT).
• Providing positive leadership for the assigned unit with a broader view toward the full Trexler Library and Muhlenberg College community.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
= A Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or a Master’s degree in an appropriate computer and information science field,
= and four years professional systems experience in an academic library, or equivalent is required.
= Ability to provide leadership for library information transfer services and actively participate in planning processes within the academic library setting is crucial.
= The incumbent should have demonstrated personnel management experience and be able to work collegially with library staff, vendors, donors, faculty, and students.
= Experience managing library technology systems and architectures, an understanding of library functions, and knowledge of library products and services integration (such as OCLC) is essential.
= Familiarity with database management, web site development and the current versions of web authoring software applications such as Dreamweaver/Contribute is also essential.
= Understanding elements of HTML, XHTML, and Cascading Style Sheets coding is necessary to upkeep of the library’s web presence.
= A strong service orientation is essential to job success.

Starting salary of $55-$60K depending upon background and experience.
