Job Description
The Law Librarian is the manager of MetLife's Law Library. It is a full-time position. The library provides reference and research services to over 500 attorneys, paralegals and other support staff. The librarian is responsible for managing an annual budget in excess of $3 million to provide these services to the department. The Law librarian reports directly to the AVP Legal Affairs Technology and Knowledge Management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent is responsible for managing MetLife Legal Affairs' Law Library. Specific responsibilities are stated below.
1. Provide reference, research, and client services. The librarian works directly with attorneys and paralegals to solve research and reference needs in the most efficient and cost effective manner. The librarian also maintains an expertise on the capabilities of electronic tools and shares the expertise through ongoing communications and training to ensure the organization is able to leverage the value of these tools.
2. Manage the library's financial resources. The librarian develops and manages resources to the budget, and leverages metrics, benchmarking and knowledge of organizational needs to direct investments or discontinue research services.
3. Manage the library's staff. The librarian hires, trains supervises and evaluates the staff. Currently there are two associates on staff.
4. Manage and direct library operations and facilities. The librarian determines the services needed, the most effective way to provide them, and the resources necessary to support them. The librarian also develops and maintains library facilities including space design and utilization, furnishings, equipment, and security.
5. Coordinate the development and application of library technology. The librarian manages the full life cycle of resource procurement including development of vendor RFP?s for services, selection and negotiation of contracts for service, and ensuring ongoing services align to agreed upon service levels.
6. Collection care and management. The librarian prepares and maintains library resources including: acquiring, processing, cataloging, maintaining, and circulating resources services.
7. Training and Marketing Library Services to Legal Affairs associates. The librarian markets and promotes the library and its products and services through internal publications and training programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS degree required, JD preferred
At least seven years experience working in a law library, preferably in a law firm or corporate legal department
At least two years experience managing and supervising library personnel
Experience performing and coordinating legal and non-legal research and keeping abreast of the latest technology, sources of information, and research practices; specific experience in the financial services industry preferable
Experience managing subscriptions, licenses, vendor contract negotiations, preparing and monitoring budgets
Experience evaluating, purchasing, and training legal staff to use on-line (i.e. WestLaw, LexisNexis) and printed legal resources
Ability to work in a fast paced environment and coordinate multiple competing tasks and demands in order to provide a high level of customer service
Strong organizational communications skills and ability to partner and work effectively with all levels of the organization
