Position Summary: One-year appointment with possibility of extension. This position may require working evenings or weekend hours from time to time. The Princeton University Library serves a diverse community of 6,600 students and 1,100 faculty members with more than 6 million printed volumes, 5 million manuscripts, and 2 million non-print items. The individual hired in this position will accession, survey, appraise, process, and create EAD finding aids and MARC-format catalog records for a wide range of literary and historical manuscript collections, personal papers, and other materials acquired for the Manuscripts Division. Subjects covered by the Division vary greatly. Some of the main strengths are modern American, British, and Latin American literature; publishing history; and U.S. history. The Processing Archivist will also help direct the work of one or more support staff positions and supervise student workers as well as participate in committee work relating to EAD development, digitization, and related technical issues. The Processing Archivist reports to the Leader of the Special Collections Team. Please include cover letter, resume and the names, titles, addresses and phone numbers of three references.
Essential Qualifications: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Significant experience in manuscripts processing, and familiarity with current developments in processing procedures. Familiarity with standards for manuscript and archival description such as DACS, AMREMM, EAD, and MARC. Degree in a relevant field in the humanities, history, or modern literature. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting. Ability to lift and handle containers that may weigh as much as 30 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred: Experience in training, supervision, and documentation writing. Technical services use of an integrated library system. XML-related skills such as XSLT or XQuery. Knowledge and awareness of current trends in the digitization of rare and unique original research materials, and of metadata formats such as MODS and METS. Good working knowledge of at least one modern European language, Spanish or French preferred. Master's or doctoral degree in humanities, history, or modern literature.
