The Primary School Librarian will lead the way in crafting a dynamic 21st century library program. This
10-month position beginning in the Fall of 2011 provides an exciting opportunity to shape the school’s
reading culture and to craft a framework for collaborative instruction, curriculum development and
technology use.
Program Administration
Library Organization and Environment
● Create and maintain:
○ an environment conducive to learning and reflective of school programs
○ a visually appealing physical library space
○ the library’s digital presence (e.g., the online catalog, the library web site and Moodle)
● Work with school leadership to provide regular and flexible access for individuals and groups to
the library
● Organize print and digital resources and technology tools both according to established
classification standards and school needs
● Utilize library management software to streamline and continually improve library service
● Work with Educational Technology Coordinator to provide guidelines for technology use
Collection Development
● Develop and follow a collection development plan, which includes regular collection analysis, an
annual inventory, and weeding
● Utilize the MKA Libraries’ Selection Process to evaluate and select resources that reflect the
MKA curriculum, programs and community
● Stay abreast of current educational technology trends and tools, especially where relevant to
information literacy and the library
Program Planning, Promotion and Evaluation
● Evaluate the library program on a continual basis, in coordination with students, teachers and
administration
● Manage the library’s budget and advocate for funding to support the library program
● Contribute to MKA Libraries Annual Report
Supervision and Leadership
● Train, oversee and support the Assistant Librarian as he/she carries out administrative support
responsibilities; evolve and grow the Assistant Librarian position, as needed
● Cultivate and oversee parent volunteer and student assistant programs
● Serve on leadership committees, including, but not limited to Curriculum Team Leaders (CTL),
Educational Technology, and Academic Programs Committee (APC)
● Design and offer information literacy and technology professional development workshops for
faculty
Teaching and Learning
Curriculum and Instruction
● Use established frameworks (e.g., Understanding by Design) to plan, map and create lessons that
integrate information literacy skills
● Employ best instructional practices, informed by knowledge of developmental needs of students
ages 4-9
● Use the MKA Research Model to frame information literacy lessons, where appropriate
● Champion and model collaborative teaching and planning to integrate information literacy skills
across the curriculum
● Seek and establish collaborative partnerships with teachers and grade levels
● Collaborate closely with Educational Technology Coordinator to promote meaningful integration
of information literacy and technology across the curriculum
● Match students and teachers with resources that meet their informational, research, recreational
and educational needs
● Implement MKA’s Information Literacy Curriculum through regular classes and flexibly
scheduled collaborative projects
Literacy and Reading
● Serve as school’s resident “reading champion”
● Encourage reading through programming, book talks, displays, digital outreach, etc.
● Employ knowledge of children’s literature and children’s developing literacy skills to guide
students in selecting the right book at the right time
Position Requirements:
● Masters Degree in Library Science with a focus on school librarianship
● Experience working with children ages 4-9
● Knowledge of current educational technology trends and tools
● Passion for and knowledge of children’s literature for ages 4-9
