The Maurice A. Dean School of Law at Hofstra University invites applications for the full-time position of Reference/Electronic Services Librarian.
The Reference/Electronic Services librarian is responsible for the public services aspects of information technology in the library. These duties include acting as liaison with database vendors and maintaining and updating the Library’s online presence. As a member of the Public Services team, the Reference/Electronic Services librarian provides extensive reference and research service to all Law Library users; participates in evening reference duty rotation; teaches legal research; publicizes new or existing electronic or digital services; trains faculty, staff, and students in the use of online databases and internet-based resources; identifies, evaluates, and recommends purchase of new print and digital resources; arranges trial periods for specific databases and other technology-based tools; assists in providing outreach through publications and exhibits, creation of online and print research guides, bibliographies and other user aids, and collaboration in web activities; instructs students in computer-assisted legal research; participates in faculty/librarian liaison program and collection development. Other duties as assigned by the Law Library Director and Assistant Director for Reference and Instructional Services. The Reference Librarian reports to the Assistant Director for Reference and Instructional Services. Some overtime during peak periods and occasional weekend assistance is required.
Qualifications: J.D. from ABA approved law school and M.L.S. from ALA accredited library school are required. Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills. Demonstrable knowledge of technological applications; facility with web content management and social media applications; ability to successfully manage technology projects; ability to research new technology applications and apply them in an academic library setting. Strong service orientation. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Willingness to participate in professional activities. Experience in law library reference department with demonstrated legal research and reference expertise is preferred. Proficient in research using Lexis, Westlaw, other electronic research resources and print legal materials is also preferred.
