External Overview:
The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, part of The New York Public Library, serves patrons who are eligible to borrow materials from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) because of a visual or physical disability. The service is offered onsite, online, and through an extensive mailing operation to residents of the five boroughs of New York City and Long Island.
External Responsibilities:
In conjunction with the Chief Librarian, the Managing Librarian is responsible for:
•Managing relationships outside of the branch - through leadership and outreach efforts within the NLS network, with local political leaders, and the broader New York City blind/visually impaired community
•Managing relationship between Andrew Heiskell Library and Long Island Talking Book Library, an Advisory and Outreach Center under our administrative oversight
•Developing and implementing workflow process improvements between NYPL and Long Island Talking Book Library
•Analyzing and reporting statistical and patron data to NLS
•Direct management responsibility for Reader Services team of 7 staff members
•Maintaining accuracy and relevancy of onsite NLS braille and talking book collection through management of bibliographic data in local KLAS database and strategic quantity selection based on reader metrics
•For designated unit, has overall accountability for staff hiring, performance management, staff development, and progressive discipline
•Overseeing staff efforts to plan and deliver engaging public programs and manages the publication of Heiskell’s quarterly newsletter
•With the Chief Librarian, builds relationships with donors, and develops and manages projects to be carried out with donor funds
•Has sole accountability for certain aspects of the Andrew Heiskell budget
•Working with the Chief Librarian, develops strategies to anticipate and address the Library’s role in shaping the digital future of braille and talking book service, i.e.: increasing patron adoption of Braille and Audio Reading Download service (BARD), the web OPAC, and social media; acts as leader and liaison to NLS and the Network Libraries on this front
•Providing leadership to all units within the Library, including project management involving staff of all departments
•Liaising with NLS Network Consultant to ensure adherence to the Standards and Guidelines of Service for NLS Network Libraries
•Overall accountability for the Andrew Heiskell web pages as well as developing and executing Heiskell’s social media strategy
•Providing reader advisory service on an as needed basis
•Has overall accountability for the Library when the Chief is not in the building
•Participating as an active member in other NYPL projects
External Qualifications:
•MLS degree from an ALA-accredited University
•Minimum of five years supervisory and project management experience in a complex library operation
•Successfully demonstrated experience with staff training and development, evaluation, and team building
•Knowledge of the operations of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, services and resources for print impaired patrons, Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS), and assistive technologies strongly preferred
•Strong technological aptitude, including proficiency with the web, social media sites, cloud computing, MS Word and Excel, and the ability to learn new technologies quickly
•Proven ability to lead and implement change based on analysis of statistics and metrics
•Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
•Requires travel and conference attendance to manage relationships across the country
•Confidentiality and discretion essential
