It's Virtual Libraries Month.... almost
From April 15-May 15 we'll be celebrating Virtual Libraries Month. Never heard of it? Ummm... well... I made it up. But it sounds good, doesn't it?
Originally scheduled to run from April 1-April 30th but rescheduled to April 15-May 15 (I was on jury duty two weeks in late March and early April and I figured if I made up the month I could change it), Virtual Libraries month gives us all an opportunity to promote what librarians do in Second Life and other virtual settings.
We have two sites up on Info Island to promote Virtual Libraries Month. Here are SLURLs to both sites:
1)--Community Virtual Library activities and services
2)--A sampling of other libraries in Second Life
The first site, a room in the CVL-West building nearby the Reference Desk, promotes the CVL core sims libraries and general services. It inlcudes services as well as posters for Info Island, Info Isalnd International, Imagination Island and Cybrary City II with information on each sim and a listing of all the parcels therein. An interactive map is included with each sim poster. Click on a map and see what it lets you do. Three of these maps were created by Rolig Loon and Rolig taught Tricky Lexington how to make the fourth.
The second site, set in a beautiful Italian garden, offers up about twelve posters with brief descriptions and landmarks to different types of libraries all over Second Life... an opportunity to see what others have done. My thanks to Leeorie Alter (Lorie Hyten) for taking the time to visit these libraries, take the photos and send me the LMs. The display would have never been completed without her help.
OK... you go to the display of different libraries in SL and don't see your library listed but would like it listed? Never fear!!! Within the main greeting sign in front of the garden is a large sign saying CLICK ME that has a notecard listing many more libraries in SL with landmarks to them. You just have to send a Landmark to your library to Rocky Vallejo inworld with a short message asking me to add your library to the listing and I'll be happy to do so.
Finally... I have posters that I can hand out for any of you who'd like to promote Virtual Library Month. I can add a notecard to them with general info and LMs to the two sites on Info Island... let me know if you'd like the posters and the notecards.
Virtual Library Month a small way of saying "Lookee Here! Lookee here!" So use the SLURLs and do some looking at what we have up and then do some promoting at your own SL Library site.
