Machinima is the virtual world video that is made in Second Life.  Frequently seen on You Tube, machinimas are one of the favorite ways to capture events or classes.  Here is a rare opportunity to learn how to create Machinima from 2 of the best.

Friday, April 1, 7-8 PM SLT, Part 2: Jazz Cat Studio: Dance & Machinima Event. You don’t have to be a machinimatographer to attend.  Join us at JazzCat Studio with Derry, Adra, Valibrarian, HVX and all... for a special evening where you’ll be hearing creative commons licensed music that can be remixed with your own machinima and other video. Derry McMahon will create a party with participants filming live, followed by group editing and collaborative machinima. Registration Now Available for SLA Conference Virtual Component

Do you want to attend the fabulous SLA Annual Conference but are unable to make the trip to Philadelphia? You can still be part of the action without leaving your home or place of work.  For the second year in a row, SLA is once again offering the SLA Virtual Conference Component.  http://sla2011.tornado1.com/general-information/virtual-component/

For $250, you can hear the keynote speakers, attend the Spot Light sessions, browse the virtual exhibit hall and chat with your fellow virtual conference attendees.  You can ask questions, share observations, and enjoy the commentary without having to catch a plane, take train, drive a car, or hitch hike down the turnpike.

The doors open today at 12noon PDT with our first address by Botgirl Questi happening at 2pm. Presentations, posters, machinima, social events, and virtual tours carry on 7×24 from now until Saturday when Pooky Amsterdam wraps up the conference proceedings with our gala awards presentations at 4pm followed by the Steampunk Ball at 6pm.

The conference isn’t just about Second Life though. We have more virtual world explorations this year than ever including World of Warcraft, Club Penguin, VenueGen, Sococo, Jibe, OpenSim, ReactionGrid, and more.

WikiFur-- a Wikipedia like Wiki for the Furry Community

 Have you ever s een a bear, fox, cat, hedgehog, skunk or some other animal walking and talking around a virtual world?  If you have, then you have seen a furry.  Furries are one of the main subcultures within Second Life and other virtual worlds.

TAP Information Services and the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University are pleased to announce another in the ongoing series of online conferences on hot topics that librarians can enjoy right at their desktops. 
Speakers and topics:
Emerging Technologies:  QR Codes and Augmented Reality
Rachel Vacek is Head of Web Services at the University of Houston Libraries and manages the Libraries' virtual presence and many other web-based services.  She presents regularly at local and national conferences and is very active within LITA and ACRL.  She's also proud to be a 2007 ALA Emerging Leader.
Anita Riley is the Digital & Web Projects Fellow at the University of Houston Libraries, where she frequently leads training sessions on technology-related topics. Prior to accepting this position, she has worked at a number of public and academic libraries.
Mobile Computing and Augmented Reality
Dr. Harry E. Pence is a SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus and presently serves as a Faculty Fellow for Emerging Technologies at the Teaching and Learning with Technology Center at the State University College  at Oneonta, NY.
QR Codes: What, Why, How & Where
Robin Ashford, Reference & Distance Services Librarian, George Fox University, works primarily with graduate and doctoral students out of the Portland Center of her university. She serves students and faculty by providing reference services face-to-face and online using various technologies. Robin has served hybrid programs and distance students as an embedded librarian in the Moodle LMS, in virtual worlds, and most recently for a course using twitter.  As an early adopter, who follows emerging technologies, her interests range from gaming and virtual worlds to microblogging and mobile technologies. She is actively involved and collaborates via social media tools and is passionate about participating in a globally connected world.

Tom Peters is the CEO of TAP Information Services, a small company that helps organizations and individuals innovate.  He is a librarian by training and inclination.  His current projects include OPAL, the Trendy Topics series of online conferences, ILEAD U, blogging for ALA TechSource, TAPintoIT, and LibraryCity, and more.
