Horizon Report 2009 Profiles Six Key Emerging Technologies for Higher Education

Each year, the Horizon Report describes six areas of emerging technology that will have significant impact on higher education within three adoption horizons over the next one to five years. “Campus leaders and practitioners alike use the report as a springboard for discussion around emerging technology,” noted Larry Johnson, chief executive officer of the NMC. “Over the six years that the report has been published, the impact on technology planning and discussions on campuses has been substantial. Now with six years of data to consider, we continue to look back at the overarching trends over time. What we see is that there are several long-term, conceptual themes that have affected, and continue to affect, the practice of teaching and learning in profound ways.” More than 75,000 copies of the 2008 Horizon Report were distributed in print and electronically last year.

According to EDUCAUSE President Diana Oblinger, “Learning, discovery, and creative expression are fundamental to higher education. Technology can help in each of those areas. But our community wants to know which emerging technologies are best for what uses. And, what examples demonstrate their potential? The Horizon Report addresses those critical questions.”

In defining the six selected areas for 2009 — mobile devices, cloud computing, geo-everything, the personal web, semantic-aware applications, and smart objects — the project tapped into an ongoing discussion among knowledgeable individuals in business, industry, and education, as well as published resources, current research and practice, and the expertise of the NMC and ELI communities. The Horizon Project’s Advisory Board probes current trends and challenges in higher education, explores possible topics for the report, and ultimately selects the technologies to be profiled.

FEMA released it's the National Disaster Housing Strategy today. Militray Libraries Newsletter Seeking Articles for Winter Edition

Military Libraries is currently soliciting articles for the Winter 2009

issue. Please consider sharing your knowledge, highlighting your successes,

or stating your opinion with the MLD community.

Deadline: All submissions should be submitted by March 15, 2009.

Articles for Military Libraries fall into several categories:

FEATURES - articles of 500-750 words focusing on military library issues.

Anything goes here: management and leadership, systems, instruction,

reference, outreach, marketing, acquisitions, programs, trends and

innovations, etc.

CURRENT ISSUES - articles of 250-650 words giving a brief overview of a

timely issue related to military libraries; your article might put an issue

in perspective, offer insight, or propose solutions.

VIEWPOINTS - articles of 250-650 words expressing an author's opinion on a

subject related to military libraries, perhaps something which might even be

deemed controversial.

SPOTLIGHTS - articles of 250-650 words describing a program, technique or

tool that has been successful and could be implemented at other libraries.

REVIEWS - articles of 250-500 words reviewing a book, web site, blog,

software application, or other resource that may be of interest to the

military library community.

MEMBER NEWS - 250 words or less highlighting division members and their

accomplishments, career moves, retirements, awards, new members, etc.

Greta's Links--Report: Getting Beyond Getting Ready for Pandemic Influenza

The House Homeland Security Committee released a majority staff report today indicating the country is not ready for Pandemic Flu.  The report is entitled "Getting Beyond Getting Ready for Pandemic Influenza" and is available at http://homeland.house.gov/SiteDocuments/20090114124322-85263.pdf  

According to the press release, the report "examines the Nation’s state of preparedness and response capabilities in the event of a pandemic influenza outbreak. It identifies sixteen weaknesses in the outgoing Bush Administration’s approach to get prepared for pandemic influenza.  In addition, the report provides fifteen critical recommendations for what Congress, the incoming Administration, and the public and private sectors can do to achieve National readiness to combat this threat."
