Please join us April 4 for an evening with SLA President Cindy Romaine. Cindy will present and lead a discussion about what it means to be "Future Ready" in our profession.

Cindy is the principal of Romainiacs Intelligent Research, a consultancy focused on information-intense projects – research, information flow, needs assessment and authoritative sourcing – related to business needs. Cindy's experience includes 16 years at Nike Inc., where she was responsible for the strategic global collections for a world-class design community. 

Cindy actively contributes to her professional community and has twice served as president of SLA’s Oregon Chapter, served on the SLA Board of Directors, received the SLA Center of Excellence award, and chaired SLA’s Innovation Laboratory and PR committee.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

 A high-leverage point to give you and your organization a competitive edge is to be Future Ready, that is, to adopt an attitude of being adaptable, flexible, and confident in utilizing the skills of the information and knowledge professional. Being ready for the future enables us to be more connected, relevant and valuable.

It is our ability to learn and adjust that is critical in this dynamically changing information landscape. Cindy will discuss becoming Future Ready by adopting strategies to prepare us for emerging opportunities in the information industry. She’ll discuss examples and bright spots.

2011 SLA MN Chapter Annual Conference Grant winner

Congratulations to Lynn Strand-Meyer, the winner of the 2011 SLA MN Chapter Annual Conference Grant. Lynn has recently started a new job and looks forward to the opportunity to jumpstart her education and networking with colleagues in her new field. She most recently served the MN Chapter as Professional Development Co-Chair in 2010 and is a member of the Annual Conference Advisory Committee for 2012. We look forward to learning about Lynn's conference experience. Again, congratulations, Lynn!

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Need to do more with less? You can transform your websites and OPACs to be more intuitive and easier for patrons to use – without additional funding. In this hands-on session, you will practice user experience observation that is easy to implement in any library or information center setting. You will be guided through creating a testing plan and practicing observation techniques with a partner. You will learn about the process for conducting successful user observation, from recruiting patrons to analyzing results. Methods for remote testing will also be covered. You will leave the session able to define the value of user experience observation for your organization, to sell the initiative to your stakeholders, and to improve your web presence for your patrons based on evidence-based user experience methods.

This workshop is based on a user experience testing initiative that earned the presenters the 2010 Innovation in Action Award from the SLA Minnesota Chapter. In their work within the Thomson Reuters intranet team, Kat Jayne and Margaret Ostrander have experienced firsthand the transformational power of centering their work around user experience methods. The result has been websites of higher quality and greater usability – and more efficient, delighted users.
