UNYSLA member wins SLA video contest!

Noni Korf Vidal is a member of UNYSLA and is the student winner of SLA's "Information Professional of the Future" Video Contest.

"Regarding my video, I wanted to respond to the theme (the informational professional of tomorrow) in a way that showed that the skills and personal attributes that would be useful in the future are similar to those we need today, and needed in the past. I also wanted my piece to be humorous, and poke fun at some expectations." -Noni Korf Vidal

Successful Spring Meeting held in Albany

Our recent meeting, held April 24, 2009 in the beautiful Standish Meeting Room in the Science Library at the University of Albany, was interesting and informative. The meeting, entitled “Career Building and Staying Relevant in Trying Economic Times”, was well attended and received.

Librarian, webmaster and author Rachel Singer Gordon started the day off with a “twelve steps” program. These “R” tasks (such as refocusing, reinvesting, rethinking) are designed to help you keep your focus on moving forward during a down economy. Noah Simon from SUNY Albany’s Career Center gave some very practical advice on building your career in the present economic climate. We also heard from some SLA members on the benefits of our SLA membership – Christian Miller spoke about SLA’s member benefits and Ruth Wolfish discussed SLA’s Alignment Project. Our panel discussion included information professionals in various career paths. This panel, moderated by Christian Miller, included Polly Farrington, Euan Morton, Jill Hurst-Wahl and Ruth Wolfish. We also consumed some delicious 100th birthday cake to celebrate SLA’s Centennial.

We hope you can join us for our next workshop - scheduled for September 25, 2009. Stay tuned for further updates.
