Job Description - Library Director

POSITION SUMMARY:
SUNY Oswego seeks an innovative, highly-motivated and visionary leader to serve as Library Director who is committed to extending the successful programs and services of the library to meet the changing needs of the 21st century student.  The ideal candidate will support Penfield Library's continuing collaborations with other college constituents to further its mission as a partner in the teaching and learning process.  As a strong supporter of the library's mission, the director will serve a critical advocacy role within and beyond the college. Reporting to the Provost, the Director will lead a progressive library that is central to SUNY Oswego's initiatives, including: sustainability, civic engagement, global competency, and faculty-student collaborative research activities.  Current library projects include renovation planning, development of a learning commons, innovative reference and instruction programs, a strong liaison program with academic departments, and leadership in resource sharing projects.

The Library Director will be responsible for the management of all academic library services and leading strategic planning, including a complete library renovation.  The Director will be the library's representative in college administrative groups and engage in partnerships to further integrate the library's mission and SUNY Oswego's strategic directions.  Working collaboratively with faculty, staff and students, the Director will build connections college-wide, integrating library resources and services with academic departments and support services. The Director will create an environment which challenges staff, fosters meaningful teams and encourages professional development and growth.  He/she will work closely with staff to improve library services and foster a supportive and productive community of scholarly achievement.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:

  • A Masters or higher degree in Librarianship/Information Sciences from an ALA accredited program.
  • Strong record of successful library management experience, including project leadership, effective engagement with complex issues in a changing environment, and experience working with and developing budgets. 
  • Experience in integrating library services with related programs and services and solid evidence of successful collaborations.
  • Current understanding of all areas of library operations and experience with emerging technologies and library applications.
  • Success in implementing innovative services.
  • Significant scholarly and/or professional contributions at a regional or national level, and a record of excellence in one or more areas of librarianship.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Leadership experience in an academic library setting.
  • Experience in implementing large-scale projects such as building renovation or staff reorganization.  
  • Experience in developing staff and teams to increase efficiency, creativity, and achieve larger strategic goals.
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty and students.
  • Experience with library outreach or fundraising.
  • Experience with current higher education assessment methods and initiatives.
  • Additional graduate degree.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The University of Rochester seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented librarian to join a team of subject librarians in the Science and Engineering Libraries.  This librarian will supervise the Physics-Optics-Astronomy (POA) Library and its staff, and provide liaison services to the Physics and Astronomy Department and the Institute of Optics.

The POA Librarian shares responsibility with other librarians in the Science and Engineering Libraries for developing high quality collections and delivering both general and specialized reference, research, instructional services and e-science information services.  Within this context, the POA Librarian develops strong connections with faculty and students, participates in long-term planning, conducts on-going assessments of collections and services, develops web-based guides and other research and learning products, collaborates on special projects, and serves on committees and task forces as needed.  Librarians are expected to participate in professional development opportunities to maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills.  The librarian in this position reports to the Director of Science and Engineering Libraries.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science; strong communication and organizational skills; strong commitment to public service; the ability to work effectively with diverse library users and staff; experience with scientific information sources; demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment.

Preferred:
One or more years of relevant experience, preferably in an academic research library; a degree of course work in physical sciences; knowledge of e-science and scientific data; innovation in delivering information services.
