When we enter Second Life for the first time, you immediately are placed on Orientation Island. I know that I didn't realize -- when I entered Second Life -- where I was and what I was suppose to do. It was only later that I found out that I had been on Orientation Island and why.
Orientation Island is where you learn how to do things in Second Life. There are several things (opportunities) to do on Orientation Island so that you learn the basic skills to move around, etc., in SL. Once you have done everything that is expected of you (which might take 30 minutes...I don't remember), you will be allowed to go to the Mainland.
So...if you have not been in Second Life at all, diving in will take a little time. You may find Orientation Island a little frustrating (I did), but it is a necessary evil.
By the way, to navigate through Orientation Island, follow the arrows.
Once you are on the Main Land, you'll need to find places to go....let me follow-up with another posting about that.
