SLA IT: Joe Ann Clifton Student Award 2010

Submissions are now being accepted for the Joe Ann Clifton Student Award 2010 from the IT Division of SLA. This award is intended to promote participation in the SLA Annual Conference by an exceptional library science student. The recipient of this award will receive:

* Student membership in SLA for one (1) year.
* Reimbursement for expenses to attend the SLA Annual Conference not to exceed $1,500  
* Recognition and presentation of the winning paper at the Annual Business Meeting of the IT Division.

The winner must be present to accept the award at the IT Business Meeting. The winning paper will be published in b/ITe, the official Division newsletter.

SLA Twitter Accounts

Somehow I missed the announcement nearly a year ago that SLA had a Twitter directory on the SLA Wiki.  Only members can access the pages, but they list both individual SLA members and their twitter IDs and twitter IDs for groups/divisions/sections/etc within SLA.

SLA Name Change

You've probably read about the name change via some other media - but in case you didn't - SLA is planning on changing its name.

The SLA Board of Directors is excited to propose that SLA change its name to the Association for Strategic Knowledge Professionals, or ASKPro. All SLA members are encouraged to voice their opinion on this proposal by casting an electronic vote in a special referendum that will begin on 16 November and end 9 December. The result will be announced on 10 December.

SLA Centennial Video contest

The finalists have been chosen and the vote has now begun for the SLA Centennial Video Contest http://www.sla.org/content/Events/centennial/video.cfm) .

The IT Division has an entry in the Professional category, visible here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz4Psrv7rvc. The title of the video is "Be bold. Play. Keep at it." It was produced by Amy Buckland, Kendra Levine and Margaret Smith who did a fabulous job.

 

The voting ballot is here: http://bit.ly/a6Jxv. You must use your membership number to vote. I'm assuming you only get one vote per category so, if I may, I suggest you cast your ballot for "Be bold. Play. Keep at it." Voting ends March 25th.

UPDATE (from HQ)

• Voting will end on March 31, 2009, at 11:59pm (EDT).
• Winners will be announced on April 7, 2009.
• View the videos as much as you would like, but members may only vote once in each category.
• You will need your SLA membership ID to cast your ballot.  If you've forgotten yours, not to worry! Instructions on how to retrieve it are included on the voting ballot through the link above.
• In case of a tie in either category, members of the SLA Centennial Commission and Video Contest Sub-committee will choose the winner(s).

Celebrate SLA's centennial year by sharing pictures of SLA events on our Flickr group.  The group already contains a couple hundred photos, and we would like to see many, many more.  Photos of chapter events are especially encouraged, as well as images from annual conferences, leadership summits, regional conferences, and other events of years past.

Centennial Celebration Website

This will officially be announced (along with a few other website enhancements) at the Leadership Summit in Savannah next week, but I thought the SLA blogging community might like a sneak peek at the RSS feeds offered on the SLA Centennial Celebration website. 

The Centennial Celebration website is very much about member input--I hope you'll share your ideas, stories, videos, and photos as the opportunity arises.  The video contest deadline is January 23, so you still have time to submit your entry and have a chance at big cash prizes.  Stay tuned for more exciting centennial activities throughout the year!

SLA 2009 Centennial Stamps

Wow! What a neat idea.  SLA is now selling 2009 Centennial Stamps through their website.

SLA Centennial Stamps are a great way to show your enthusiasm   and support for the association's 100 year anniversary. Stamps are sold per   sheet and contain 20 U.S. first class postage stamps with the SLA 2009 conference   logo.

Stamps will be shipped via Priority Mail through the United States Postal Service   at a flat rate of US$ 4.80 within 3 - 5 business days.

If I actually mailed anything, I would buy some :)
