Call for volunteer: SLA Information Technology Division's Digital Content Section Chair, 2011

Dear SLA Information Technology Division's Digital Content Section members,

 We are looking for the Digital Content Section Chair who will be serving remainder of 2011, potential through 2012. The section chair is expected to communicate with the section members and to propose a program during the SLA Annual Conference for IT. Chairs don't have to be experts, but are expected to spend sometimes developing conference program proposal(s) and to facilitating communication between the section members. This volunteering opportunity will allow him/her to expand skill set and to network with other SLA members. If you are interested in, please e-mail me at [email protected]

Excuse any duplication.  I am trying to reach as many Webmaster Section Members and potential members as possible.

Hello, Webmaster Section Members,

Today's library website is much more complicated than it used to be.  In order to meet the new responsibilities, we all have to expand our knowledge in new areas of web development and management.  To keep up with this reality, and to provide a forum for us to communicate and share experience in these issues, I propose to change the Webmaster Section’s scope note.  In particular, I propose to add these new areas to our “section interests.”  I have also proposed a change of section name from “Webmaster Section” to “Web Management Section,” to be more inclusive to members who may not be webmasters, but are interested in web development and management.  Below is the proposed changes and the old scope note.

Proposed New Section Name and Scope

Web Management Section

The Web Management Section provides a forum for members to exchange information on planning, designing, programming and managing complex organizational web sites to support the information management needs of their organizations, whether on the Internet, Intranets, or Extranets. Section interests include website management and staffing,  information architecture, web design principles, user experience design, web content life cycle management, metrics, website usage pattern analysis, search engine optimization, support for searching and resource discovery by website users, tools to build online community, server software, website management software, and programming and scripting languages. 

Current scope of the section

The Webmaster Section provides a forum for members to exchange information on planning, designing, and programming complex organizational web sites to support the information management needs of their organizations, whether on the Internet, Intranets, or Extranets. Section interests include server software, web collection management, security and privacy concerns, browser compatibility, site management tools and reports, programming and scripting languages, contracting for content and services, support for interactive communications, and support for searching and resource discovery by website users. The IT Division website further provides an opportunity for members to monitor new technologies, share information and develop new skills.

RE: Master of Science in Information and Knowledge Strategy program At Columbia University

Dear IT members, we have developed a master degree program with Columbia University for those who work on KM, knowledge services, and knowledge strategy. We think the program has important implications for knowledge strategists in many fields, including information technology.

Virtual Events Committee: Call for volunteers

The IT Division recently created a new Virtual Events Committee to organize virtual educational events for our community. Some initial ideas include an informal best practice roundtable series and a tech briefing series focusing on popular technologies. We are looking for a team of energetic volunteers to create a virtual educational program for our Division. Through brainstorming, event planning, experimentation with technologies, and reaching out to other divisions/chapters, you will have plenty of opportunities to expand your skills and to network with other members.
