Volunteer Opportunity - IT Division Virtual Events (VE) Committee

Description:
Looking for a flexible and virtual volunteer opportunity? The IT Division's Virtual Events Committee needs members to help out with coordinating webinars to keep members up to date on IT-related topics of interest to information professionals. Past events have included talks on cloud computing (in collaboration with the Silicon Valley chapter) and using LinkedIn as a personal career planning, research and business strategy tool. 

 Volunteer tasks include:

- pitch ideas for webinars and invite speakers

- seek out opportunities for collaboration with other chapters/divisions

- act as moderator or tech support during virtual events

 Time commitment: 

Flexible according to interest and role. The Committee has thus far planned two events per year.

2012 Grieg Aspnes Outstanding IT Member Award - Call for Nominations

The Grieg Aspnes Outstanding IT Division Member Award is given to an individual who has greatly contributed to the profession, the association, and particularly the division. Do you know someone whose contributions to IT should be recognized? Please send  a brief nomination describing recent Division-related activities.  Any supporting documentation, such as the nominee's vitae,  is most helpful and appreciated. Self-nominations are also welcomed.  We will announce the award winner at our business meeting at the Annual Conference in Chicago.

The deadline for submission is April 30, 2012 (Monday). E-mail your nomination to Beth Kraemer, IT Membership and Awards Chair, at [email protected]. Please include "SLA IT Outstanding Member Award" in the subject line.

2012 Jo Ann Clifton Student Award submissions

Submissions are now being accepted for the Jo Ann Clifton Student Award 2012 from the IT Division of SLA. This award is intended to promote participation in the SLA Annual Conference by an exceptional library science student. The recipient of this award will receive:

• Student membership in SLA for one (1) year.
• Reimbursement for expenses to attend the SLA Annual Conference not to exceed $1,500 and limited to the following:
  • Economy class round-trip airfare to the Annual Conference (July 15-18, Chicago, IL)
  • Student registration for the Annual Conference (including the IT Business Meeting).
  • Lodging during the conference.
  • Transportation during the conference.
  • Meals during the conference.

Recognition and presentation of the winning paper at the Annual Business Meeting of the IT Division. The winner must be present to accept the award at the IT Business Meeting. The winning paper will be published in b/ITe, the official Division newsletter.

Submission Requirements

• The topic of the paper should pertain to the use of information technology. A paper which addresses a topic in a practical rather than a theoretical manner is preferred.
• Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited MLS or MIS program at the time of the award competition. Previous winners are not eligible for the award.
• Entries may be a paper which the applicant has written or is preparing for a class but has not been published. Only one paper per applicant will be accepted.
• IT reserves the right not to award the prize if it is the opinion of the judges that no submission is worthy of the award.
• IT will retain first publication rights of the winning paper.

Honors for IT members

The IT Division is proud to be home to members who have recently received SLA honors:

At the Leadership Summit, four members have received the following association awards:

• James Manasco (immediate past Past-Chair), Dee Magnoni (past Chair) and Libby Trudell (present Public Relations Chair) became SLA Fellows
• Libby Trudell also received a special President Citation for her work on the  Public Relations Advisory Council in regards to the Alignement Ambassadors program
• Amy Buckland (present Chair of the Communications and Social Media Section) received one of the five Rising Stars Award

Other association awards have since been announced:

• David Shumaker received the Rose Vormelker Award
• Barbie Keiser received the Dow Jones Leadership Award 
   

And now, three IT members are on the SLA 2011 Board of Directors slate!

• Richard Huffine for Division Cabinet Chair-Elect
• Jill Hurst-Wahl (present IT Professional Development Chair) for Director
• James Manasco (immediate past Past-President) for Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect

New Governing Document

Here are the results of our online special meeting and vote for the changes brought to the IT Division's Governing Document:

 

Number of votes: 111 (online), 6 (paper, does not include one invalid ballot) for a total of 117

As more than 50% of the membership that has voted, has voted "yes", the new Governing Document, with the Division's new scope, mission and vision statements, is now adopted. You can see it at http://units.sla.org/division/dite/GovDoc.pdf .

 

The Division will now proceed with the next steps in preparing our strategic plan.Thank you for your vote!

Vote on SLA IT Governing Document

Today or in the coming days, you will receive an email inviting you to vote on a new Governing Document for the Division.

We are asking you to vote on changes in the Division's scope, mission and vision statements. Revising this portion of the Governing Document was our first step in preparing a new strategic plan for the Division.Those proposed changes have been presented to the membership this past June at the Business Meeting, on the Division's website and have been mentioned in bIT/e and this blog.

The changes are in the first section of the Governing Document only, as specified in the ballot. We didn't put the two texts in the ballot because of length issues but we have linked to them. For your convenience, please find the current and proposed version below (relevant parts only).

NAME AND MISSION

The name of this unit is the Information Technology Division, Special Libraries Association.

The mission of this Division shall be that of the Special Libraries Association.

The scope of the Division encompasses the planning, development, and practical application of existing and new technologies and systems for the processing and control of information, in any subject discipline and in any form, for its eventual retrieval and use convenient to the requester.

The mission of this Division shall be that of the Special Libraries Association, and also to provide an environment for the communication, dissemination and examination of thoughts, opinions, and concepts about information technology.

The vision of the Information Technology Division is to advance the leadership role of its members in using information technology for putting knowledge to work for the benefit of decision-makers and other clientele in corporations, government, academia, the professions, and society at large, as well as to shape the destiny of our information and knowledge-based society.

The scope of the Division encompasses the planning, development, implementation, and application of existing and new technologies and systems that provide for the process of collecting, storing, and organizing information for its future retrieval, exchange, use, and delivery.

Mission, vision and scope statements

Work has continued on our strategic plan preparation, led by Chair-Elect Eric Goodman. On the Division’s website, you will find a draft of a new scope note, mission and vision statements. Your comments, suggestions and questions are welcomed.

Look for more ways to participate in the process this fall. We want to create a plan that is short but with solid objectives to carry the Division forward.

A bit of Division history

30 years ago this year, in 1979, the Division changed its name from its original name, the Documentation Division, to its current name, the Information Technology Division.

That's just one tidbit you will be able to learn if you catch the new IT Division timeline created for the 100th anniversary of SLA. The timeline, a Flash video, will be  presented at our Business Meeting on June 16th and other events at #sla2009. It will also be available on the Division website as well as a new Division history.

The new history and the flash video are the accomplishments of PR Chair, Libby Trudell, and Adam Hudson, helped by David Ware, our webmaster.
