Does thinking about diversity in your library make you cringe? How well do your collection and services meet the needs of your user population?   How do you ensure that diversity is valued in your organization? What strategies can be used to build community within your organizational context?  Trevor Dawes, a founding member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, and past chair of the American Library Association’s Committee on Diversity, will share his views on these topics.  He’ll address the importance of diversity in libraries and offer a few suggestions as to how to make the environment more welcoming and supportive.

Trevor A. Dawes is the Circulation Services Director at the Princeton University Library, where he is responsible for the circulation, reserve, stack, remote storage and BorrowDirect (a rapid, unmediated book delivery service) operations.  He previously held several positions at the Columbia University Libraries in New York.  He has over ten years’ experience managing access services departments in large academic research libraries and has helped to develop new or enhance existing services in each of his positions.  He has worked with staff in developing and providing training for electronic reserve services; has written on RFID technology in libraries; has co-authored a publication on the organization and management of access services and is editor of a volume on electronic reserves.  Mr. Dawes earned his MLS from Rutgers University’s School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies, and has two additional Masters Degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.  He is an active member of several library professional associations.

NJSLA Networking Event in Fair Lawn (Bergen County) - Sept. 27

NJSLA is organizing another Networking Event, following the success of our March and May meetings this year. We will have time for introductions, a presentation, group discussion, and end with light refreshments.

What:  The presentation will demo social networking on the Web (e.g., LinkedIn, Facebook), report on SLA’s 23 Things initiative, plus other topics of interest.

When:  Sat., Sept. 27, 2008, from 1-4 p.m.
