POSTPONED - Dine-Around in New Brunswick

ORIGINAL POST:

Because of conflicts with a Princeton-Trenton SLA event, we're indefinitely postponing the scheduled Sept. 15 Dine-Around in New Brunswick. We're trying to find a date that doesn't conflict with other SLA or campus events, so stay tuned!

All those who have signed up have been notified of the postponement.

I apologize for the change in plans.

SLA-NY Happy Hour: Wednesday, Aug. 26, 5:30 to 7:30 pm

Please join us for a drink, a snack, and good networking on Wednesday, August 26th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Happy Hours are a regular event which the NY Chapter organizes to give members a chance to meet and chat.  Prospective members, students, and colleagues also are welcome.

There is no charge to attend, and there is no agenda except to network with colleagues in a quiet space. You will have an opportunity to introduce yourself to the group and make any announcements (such as a new position, job search or job availability).  Please come and tell us who you are and, if you are looking for something, what it is.

NJSLA Seeking Nominees for President-Elect and Executive Board

Your New Jersey Chapter of the SLA is seeking candidates for President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer and Director of Communications for next year.

This is a great opportunity to learn about SLA, network, develop leadership skills and serve your fellow information professionals. The election or affirmation of officers will be held at the chapter's annual meeting and holiday party, Tuesday, Dec. 15. (Information on that event will be posted soon.) If there is a contested election, then electronic ballots will be distributed on or about Oct. 31.

The offices of Secretary, Treasurer and Director of Communications are all two-year terms, for January 2010 through December 2011. SLA, like ALA and some other organizations, has a three-year term for chapter and unit leaders. So, whoever is elected President in December will serve 2010 as President-Elect, 2011 as President and 2012 as Past President.

The official descriptions of each office are in our Chapter Practices document at http://tinyurl.com/l4npyp. In addition to the officers’ roles as members of the chapter’s Executive Board, here are some of the most important roles for each officer:

President-Elect

• Chairs programming committee.
• Learns about chapter and SLA operations in anticipation of his or her year as president.
• Attends the SLA’s Leadership Summit (St. Louis in January 2010) and Annual Conference (New Orleans in June 2010). (The chapter provides financial support for most or all of these expenses if not reimbursed by the president-elect's employer.)
• Attends all chapter meetings and substitutes for the chapter president when necessary.

Secretary

• Records and distributes minutes of the chapter's business meetings.
• Conducts official correspondence and maintains a file of current records as requested by the chapter president.

Treasurer

• Maintains all financial records of the chapter and submits required reports to the association office.
• Collects, deposits and expends funds as requested and authorized by the president.
• Arranges for the president to have signing authority.
• Reports the fiscal condition of the chapter to the executive board.
• Helps prepare budget and monitors chapter fund-raising activities.
  

Director of Communications

• Responsible for content review, fiscal accountability, and responsiveness to the Chapter membership of Chapter electronic and written communications.
• Advises president and board on communications efforts, including listserv, bulletin and Web sites including chapter blog.

Spaulding Scholarship Available for New Jersey Library School Students

The New Jersey Special Libraries Association (NJSLA) is pleased to announce the availability of its annual Spaulding Scholarship.  The $500 award, which also includes a full year membership in SLA, will be granted to a New Jersey resident currently enrolled in any accredited Masters level program in library science.
 
The scholarship is named for Frank Spaulding who was SLA President in the 1986-1987 year.  He created the Task Force on the Value of the Information Professional and was NJSLA President from 1977 to 1978. He was known for his outstanding dedication and contributions to the profession.  
 
Applications will be accepted from September 1 to October 15, 2009.  The award will be given at the annual NJSLA business meeting in December, 2009.
 
All applicants must complete a personal statement on the topic “How will you position yourself for career growth and how will SLA membership help you achieve it?  Additional materials, including a transcript and letter of recommendation, are required.  A full list of required materials and more detail on the application process is available at http://units.sla.org/chapter/cnj/NJSLA_Scholarship.htm

Save the Date for The New York Information & Intelligence Forum — Thursday, Nov. 19 at Baruch College, NYC

The New York Information & Intelligence Forum 

Thursday, November 19, 2009, at Baruch College in Manhattan.

The Forum will be a full day of discussion exploring our future roles, tools and products.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr. William Duggan of Columbia University, author of Napoleon's Glance; the Secret of Strategy, The Art of What Works; How Success Really Happens and Strategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement.

The Forum's program will provide panels and round tables inviting both professionals and vendors to speak to developing innovation during this challenging year, coincidentally the 100th anniversary of SLA.

In SLA’s Centennial Year, you may be hearing a lot about Realignment; changing the name of the association; and bringing other professionals into our fold. Are “Libraries” and “Librarians” still a relevant “product,” but in need of new marketing? Anne will help bring clarity to the Association’s goals and process as SLA members get ready to make important decisions about the future of the profession.

Anne Caputo is Executive Director of Dow Jones' Learning & Information Professional Programs where she is responsible for the planning and development of learning initiatives for Dow Jones Content Technology Solutions group.  She is also responsible for strategic planning, marketing and the creation of alliances with and for information professionals.  Prior to joining Dow Jones in 1998, she served in various positions with The Dialog Corporation, most recently as Director of Dialog's Quantum information professional program and the Classroom Instruction Program.
 

Additionally, Anne is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland, College of Library and Information Services, where she teaches Access to Information in Electronic Environments. She is also a member of the distance education faculty for the University of Tennessee, School of Information Sciences.
 

Anne has served SLA at the local level as a Director and later President of the Washington, DC Chapter.  She has also served at the international level on SLA's Board of Directors as the 2006-2007 Chapter Cabinet Chair and as Secretary to the Board. She is currently the Ethics Ambassador for the Washington, DC Chapter. In 2004 she was named a recipient of SLA's Rose L. Vormelker Award for mentoring students and practicing professionals and was named a Fellow of SLA at the 2008 Annual Conference.
