SLA Diversity Leadership Award Applications due February 15, 2010

The SLA Diversity Leadership Development Program (DLDP) Award aims to accelerate the advancement and visibility of members who represent a diverse population of the Association by mentoring them for more leadership opportunities within SLA, to ensure that the Association remains vital, relevant, and representative of its diverse membership.

 The DLDP Awardee receives a $1,000 stipend to assist in defraying the cost of attending SLA 2010 in New Orleans, as well as complimentary registration and specific ticketed events as appropriate. Learn more about the DLDP Award today, and nominate yourself, or someone you know. Deadline for applications is 15 February 2010.

Save the Date! Guy St. Clair to be featured as 2010 NJSLA Annual Alice Rankin Distinguished Lecturer - March 3rd

Please save the date for New Jersey Chapter SLA's 33rd Annual Alice Rankin Distinguished Lecture.

Guy St. Clair will be honored as this year's Alice Rankin Distinguished Lecturer. Guy will discuss his recent work compiling SLA's 100-year history and will share his thoughts on the future of specialized librarianship.

Guy St. Clair serves as President and Consulting Specialist for Knowledge Services at SMR International, a New York-based strategy consulting company. In his latest book, SLA at 100: From "Putting Knowledge to Work" to Building the Knowledge Culture, St. Clair traces the 100 year history of the Special Libraries Association. Guy is recognized as a leader in knowledge management, knowledge services, and the development of the organizational knowledge culture.

Hi from NJSLA's new Director of Communications

Hi, Everyone -

If it isn't obvious to you yet, I've never blogged before. Is it like writing an email for work or dashing of a letter to a friend? Or is it more like a personal diary that you all get to sneek a peek at?  Either way there's a first time for everything, so here goes....

I'm really excited about my new role as NJSLA Director of Communications this year. The Board met last night and everyone seems to be really interested in getting our member communications going in some great projects for 2010.

Whether in face-to-face meetings, NJSLA's Blog (thanks Eric!), revamping the NJSLA website (thanks Kate!), resuscitating our newsletter, NJSLA's Bulletin (thanks Sandra!), or improving our NJSLA listserv,  we are all excited about getting to know our members better and getting everyone more involved.

• Are you good at Publisher and love choosing just the right font? You can volunteer for our new Newsletter Committee.
• Are you up on the latest Website Designs and love content management? You can volunteer for our Website Redesign Committee.
• Do you like to blog about library topics? You can volunteer to be a blog editor and get your voice out there.

One of the greatest things about NJSLA is getting to know each other and building our human networks which ultimately will help us find jobs, find resources, find answers, make friends and most importantly have a good time.

If you're interested in helping with any of our Communications efforts this year, feel free to drop me a line.

SLA-NY Event: A Night at the Museum (Friday, Jan 22 at Metropolitan Museum of Art)

SLA-NY is delighted to announce a joint program with ARLIS (Art Libraries Society of North America) for members of both organizations.

Please join us for a presentation about two new educational resources recently made available by IFAR (International Foundation for Art Research) on its expanded, redesigned website www.ifar.org.  Dr. Sharon Flescher, Executive Director of IFAR and Editor-In-Chief of the IFAR Journal, will make the presentation on:

Linked bibliographic databases of published catalogues raisonnés and of catalogues in preparation
A major new resource on Art Law and Cultural Property.  A quote from the Art Law and Cultural Property section of IFAR's website: "International Cultural Property Ownership and Export Legislation (ICPOEL) and Case Law and Statutes (CLS) will help users navigate the increasingly complex and abundant body of legislation and case law regarding the acquisition and ownership of artworks."

A reception co-sponsored by ARLIS/NY and SLA/NY will follow in the museum's Watson Library, which is normally only for staff and scholarly researchers.

In the Art Study Room in the Uris Education Wing on the south side of the museum. SLA-NY Happy Hour at Midtown Executive Club (Tuesday, Jan. 26)

Please  join your SLA-NY colleagues and friends to welcome in the new year and new decade on Tuesday, January 26th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. We are pleased to be able once again to use the Midtown Executive Club, with a couple of changes from 2009.  We will all be in the front room where the bar is, known as Rumford Hall, so that other Club guests can enjoy the back room.  There will not be snacks at the Happy Hour, so you might want to have a granola bar in advance.  And drink prices, as listed below, will be the same for both hours.  Happy Hours at MEC remain a wonderful opportunity for us to convene informally, and there is no place else in New York where we can duplicate this set-up in a quiet, attractive, and convenient space that we have all to ourselves @ a very reasonable price for SLA-NY.

Happy Hours are a regular event which the NY Chapter organizes to give members a chance to meet and chat.  Prospective members, students, and colleagues also are welcome. There is no charge to attend, and the main agenda is to network with colleagues in a quiet space. You will have an opportunity to introduce yourself to the group and make any brief announcement (such as a new position, job search or job availability).  Please come and tell us who you are and, if you are looking for something, what it is.

SLA-NY Program: Doing More With Less (Thursday, Jan. 21 in NYC)

SLA-NY @ METRO presents its first program for 2010:

Doing More with Less: How to maximize your resources and increase your department's value & visibility

Thursday, January 21st, 2:30-4:30PM at METRO, 57 East 11th Street, 4th Floor, between University and Broadway

Three information professionals from three different types of libraries share what they have done to aggregate their resources, streamline their processes and increase their productivity at their institution.

Happy Blitt, a librarian at Elliott Management, will show how her company developed a portal for managing research services using SharePoint. SharePoint is commonly used to host collaboration sites and intranets; the end product however is often dependent on customization both in terms of functionality and design.

Don MacLeod, Manager of Knowledge Management at Debevoise & Plimpton, will show how he revamped a legacy intranet to provide easy access to low-cost alternatives to metered research services. He'll also explain the training programs that all new associates must attend: this is when they are taught how to research cost-effectively and to use non-metered resources in their initial research. Don will also demonstrate some simple ways to keep patrons up to speed on new tools and techniques using an e-mailable "e-zine."

Kevin Reiss, University Systems Librarian at the City University of New York, will show us how to mash our way to productivity. Mashups are web applications that use common Internet tools, technologies, and data formats (think RSS and RDF) combined with simple web programming techniques to produce new and unique content displays. All of the tools, widgets, and data needed for building mashups are readily available in today's web environment. In a time when everyone is looking stretch additional value out of our budgets building mashups can usually be accomplished for little or no cost. Example applications will be presented using tools and data available from well-known Internet services like Delicious, Google Maps, Yahoo Pipes, and Wordpress, and from other content providers who provide "mashable" data.
