Guy St. Clair serves as President and Consulting Specialist for Knowledge Services at SMR International, a New York-based strategy consulting company. In his latest book, SLA at 100: From "Putting Knowledge to Work" to Building the Knowledge Culture, St. Clair traces the 100 year history of the Special Libraries Association. SLA-NY Event: A Night at the Museum (Friday, Jan 22 at Metropolitan Museum of Art)

SLA-NY is delighted to announce a joint program with ARLIS (Art Libraries Society of North America) for members of both organizations.

Please join us for a presentation about two new educational resources recently made available by IFAR (International Foundation for Art Research) on its expanded, redesigned website www.ifar.org.  Dr. Sharon Flescher, Executive Director of IFAR and Editor-In-Chief of the IFAR Journal, will make the presentation on:

Linked bibliographic databases of published catalogues raisonnés and of catalogues in preparation
A major new resource on Art Law and Cultural Property.  A quote from the Art Law and Cultural Property section of IFAR's website: "International Cultural Property Ownership and Export Legislation (ICPOEL) and Case Law and Statutes (CLS) will help users navigate the increasingly complex and abundant body of legislation and case law regarding the acquisition and ownership of artworks."

A reception co-sponsored by ARLIS/NY and SLA/NY will follow in the museum's Watson Library, which is normally only for staff and scholarly researchers.

SLA-NY Happy Hour at Midtown Executive Club (Tuesday, Jan. 26)

Please  join your SLA-NY colleagues and friends to welcome in the new year and new decade on Tuesday, January 26th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. We are pleased to be able once again to use the Midtown Executive Club, with a couple of changes from 2009.  We will all be in the front room where the bar is, known as Rumford Hall, so that other Club guests can enjoy the back room.  There will not be snacks at the Happy Hour, so you might want to have a granola bar in advance.  And drink prices, as listed below, will be the same for both hours.  Happy Hours at MEC remain a wonderful opportunity for us to convene informally, and there is no place else in New York where we can duplicate this set-up in a quiet, attractive, and convenient space that we have all to ourselves @ a very reasonable price for SLA-NY.

Happy Hours are a regular event which the NY Chapter organizes to give members a chance to meet and chat.  Prospective members, students, and colleagues also are welcome. There is no charge to attend, and the main agenda is to network with colleagues in a quiet space. You will have an opportunity to introduce yourself to the group and make any brief announcement (such as a new position, job search or job availability).  Please come and tell us who you are and, if you are looking for something, what it is.

SLA-NY Program: Doing More With Less (Thursday, Jan. 21 in NYC)

SLA-NY @ METRO presents its first program for 2010:

Doing More with Less: How to maximize your resources and increase your department's value & visibility

Thursday, January 21st, 2:30-4:30PM at METRO, 57 East 11th Street, 4th Floor, between University and Broadway

Three information professionals from three different types of libraries share what they have done to aggregate their resources, streamline their processes and increase their productivity at their institution.

Happy Blitt, a librarian at Elliott Management, will show how her company developed a portal for managing research services using SharePoint. SharePoint is commonly used to host collaboration sites and intranets; the end product however is often dependent on customization both in terms of functionality and design.

Don MacLeod, Manager of Knowledge Management at Debevoise & Plimpton, will show how he revamped a legacy intranet to provide easy access to low-cost alternatives to metered research services. He'll also explain the training programs that all new associates must attend: this is when they are taught how to research cost-effectively and to use non-metered resources in their initial research. Don will also demonstrate some simple ways to keep patrons up to speed on new tools and techniques using an e-mailable "e-zine."

Kevin Reiss, University Systems Librarian at the City University of New York, will show us how to mash our way to productivity. Mashups are web applications that use common Internet tools, technologies, and data formats (think RSS and RDF) combined with simple web programming techniques to produce new and unique content displays. All of the tools, widgets, and data needed for building mashups are readily available in today's web environment. In a time when everyone is looking stretch additional value out of our budgets building mashups can usually be accomplished for little or no cost. Example applications will be presented using tools and data available from well-known Internet services like Delicious, Google Maps, Yahoo Pipes, and Wordpress, and from other content providers who provide "mashable" data.

Fee-based abstracting and indexing services vs. free search services

Library budgets are facing drastic cuts, given the current economic crisis. Unfortunately, the fee-based abstracting and indexing services are now in the spotlight and, in many cases, on the chopping block.  These A&I services were considered sacred and essential in the seventies, and the birth of online searching only strengthened their position.  However, in the intervening forty years a new paradigm has evolved.  Open access and free search services such as Google Scholar, Scitopia, Scirus, and CiteSeer are now making librarians question the need for fee-based services. This presentation will examine the changing landscape for secondary A&I services and explore the possibility that these services may indeed follow the downward spiral that newspapers are on today.

SLA-NY Event: LIS Online Career Fair at Baruch College (Tuesday, Jan. 12)

SLA-NY's Employment Task Force is sponsoring a full-day LIS career fair on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, in conjunction with the LIS Online Career Fair.

If you're in the job market, you could participate online from anywhere by registering for $39 ($29 for students, $79 for groups).

Or you could pay the same amount or less, depending on your travel costs, while networking and lunching with SLA-NY members. The live event, limited to 50 participants, is free to members of SLA's New York Chapter, or $20 for others (including members of the New Jersey Chapter who are not also New York members).

If you're an SLA member but not a member of the New York Chapter, you could pay the non-member fee, or join the chapter ($18 a year until the end of 2009, then $20.) I personally have paid the extra dues to join both the New Jersey and New York Chapters, but I realize that money is tight, especially for those who are looking for work and would benefit the most from the career fair. So please email Janet Peros (contact information below) if you want to know if there are free spaces for the event before paying to join an additional SLA chapter.

Recap of NJSLA Annual Meeting and Holiday Party

At the Dec. 15 NJSLA Annual Meeting and Holiday Party, we had the chance to celebrate the holidays, review the chapter's 2009 accomplishments and events, honor three of our most dedicated members (Liz Arnold, Arda Agulian and Barbara Burton), and award a scholarship to Pratt Institute MSLIS student Kristin Gahona.

The party, sponsored by PRO LiBRA, was held at the Rutgers Club in New Brunswick. The event gave us the chance to donate food to the Franklin Foodbank and participate in a Yankee Gift Exchange. Our incoming chapter president, Sandra Baker, ably handled the gift swap, while Arda arranged the food drive.

Photos from the event (thanks to Seth J. Bookey and Kristen Fitzpatrick) have been posted to Google Picasa (see slideshow below), and to to the NJSLA Facebook group.

You may wonder why the photos show some members and guests with more than one gift from the exchange. Here's how it worked: Everyone who brought a gift for the exchange could either choose a wrapped item or steal a previously opened item from someone else. Our colleague Miranda Scott had the good fortune to choose some of the most popular items, which were promptly taken from her. The two most popular gifts (stolen over and over) were a set of holiday tablecloths and a set of ceramic bowls. Guests were asked to regift items or spend about $10 or less on the gift swap.

Thanks to all who attended and made it a fun evening!
