We have a wonderful meeting planned for those involved (and interested in) in quality, efficient, and beautiful web design  We suggest this is a great meeting if you are concerned with ease of use of your website for your clients and it will give you more knowledge about how a pro thinks about and designs interfaces.

Eli Beitzuri presentation:   "Simple Strategies for a Killer UX"

Eli is the Principal and Owner of Fluidik Interactive.  He designs user interfaces for Silicon Valley start-ups, and has graciously extended an East Coast visit to meet with us to discuss his work and answer questions, so this is a Monday evening meeting.

Science Librarian, Rider University, will discuss how Moore Library at Rider University uses Google Docs and the READ Scale for tracking transactions at the reference desk.

Math/Computer Science Librarian, Rutgers University Libraries, will discuss QR Codes and their use at Rutgers Library of Science and Medicine.

Hi from NJSLA's new Director of Communications

Hi, Everyone -

If it isn't obvious to you yet, I've never blogged before. Is it like writing an email for work or dashing of a letter to a friend? Or is it more like a personal diary that you all get to sneek a peek at?  Either way there's a first time for everything, so here goes....

I'm really excited about my new role as NJSLA Director of Communications this year. The Board met last night and everyone seems to be really interested in getting our member communications going in some great projects for 2010.

Whether in face-to-face meetings, NJSLA's Blog (thanks Eric!), revamping the NJSLA website (thanks Kate!), resuscitating our newsletter, NJSLA's Bulletin (thanks Sandra!), or improving our NJSLA listserv,  we are all excited about getting to know our members better and getting everyone more involved.

• Are you good at Publisher and love choosing just the right font? You can volunteer for our new Newsletter Committee.
• Are you up on the latest Website Designs and love content management? You can volunteer for our Website Redesign Committee.
• Do you like to blog about library topics? You can volunteer to be a blog editor and get your voice out there.

One of the greatest things about NJSLA is getting to know each other and building our human networks which ultimately will help us find jobs, find resources, find answers, make friends and most importantly have a good time.

If you're interested in helping with any of our Communications efforts this year, feel free to drop me a line.

Pres4Lib2009: A Camp for Library Speakers and Trainers — Friday, June 12 at Princeton Public Library

Looking to hone your presentation skills, become a better speaker, or develop your training/presenting toolkit? If so, you will not want to miss the inaugural Pres4Lib Camp on June 12, 2009 in Princeton, NJ. The camp, hosted by the bloggers of Library Garden and friends, is being sponsored by SJRLC, CJRLC and the Princeton Public Library. The camp is open to anyone who works in libraries or with libraries and librarians.

Cost for the all-day session is $25. More information is on the Library Garden blog.

Top Ten Reasons to Come Hear Peter Bromberg (Thursday, April 23 in New Brunswick)

Time's running out to register online for Peter Bromberg's talk, The Value of Leadership, the Leadership of Value: Remaining Relevant in Times of Change. For more information on Pete and the program, see the blog post.

Without further ado ... Pete tells us the Top Ten Reasons you should come to hear what he has to say. Actually, it's all about YOU and what YOU'LL DO (well, number 9 might not be all about you):

1. Learn how to stop worrying and love disruptive technologies.
2. Find out whether the speed of light is fast enough service, or do they really want it yesterday?
3. See a great slide of a brain made out of lime green Jell-O.
4. Find out what a "lucky saucer" is and why you have to have one.
5. Learn to go beyond customer expectations. (If Henry Ford responded to customer requests, he would have bred faster horses.)
6. Find out whether that 100-page strategic plan makes a better door stop or bird cage lining.
7. Find out what you may have in common with British Elementary School children.
8. Laugh.
9. Be either greatly relieved or greatly disturbed to learn that when it comes to value, it's not about you. 
10. Find out why, after all, libraries should be in the filtering business.

Got a Programming Idea? You Can Make It Happen!

The NJSLA recently (March 16) held a working dinner meeting to come up with programming ideas. The meeting was held at the home of Ruth Wolfish, former NJ Chapter President and currently the SLA Chapter Cabinet-Chair Elect. Thanks to Ruth for hosting us, arranging for the food and drinks, and coming up with a fun format with special prizes from her employer, IEEE.

The most popular topics from the 10 participants were:

• Legal ethics for special librarians.
• "Catalog Around," with members doing volunteer cataloging work for a nonprofit organization such as a historical society or synagogue/church (but not limited to those types of groups). The person proposing the idea cataloged materials for the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference using LibraryThing, over an extended period of time. You can see her work online.
• Members sharing career success stories.
• Book club.
• Survey of e-resources, with vendors invited to a "try it before you buy it" event.
• Events on Web 2.0 technologies such as Twitter, and on e-books and e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle. Check out the SLA's Innovation Laboratory and Innovation Wiki for more tips and tricks. (Note: You'll need to sign up for the wiki in this case.)

Other ideas included:

• Organizing tours such as those at Revolutionary War/historic sites in Morristown or Princeton, the Big Onion Tour in New York City, and a tour of the Newark Public Library, where the NJSLA archives are kept.
  
• Participating in resume and career workshops offered by local libraries. NJSLA members can offer useful advice to the many people who have lost their jobs in this very tough economy.
