Position Description:
General Description:
Under the general direction of the Head of Collection Development:
Provides strong and effective leadership and oversight in developing and managing the Map collection
Collaborates with other curators and provides leadership on map materials throughout the Library
Works to develop collections that reflect the changing needs of readers and researchers
Manages the acquisitions budget for the Map collection
Participates in the ongoing evaluation and assessment of the Library’s map collections to identify and build on core collection strengths
In collaboration with others, selects and manages geospatial and map-related subscription databases
Identifies, evaluates and prioritizes candidates for digitization initiatives
In collaboration with others, develops scaleable tools for delivering NYPL’s digital collections to the public using web mapping discovery technologies and advises on best practices for metadata schema
Collaborates with Library Sites and Services staff and engages with users and researchers to provide reference and research services including individualized consultations; engages with users online to foster an interactive and creative use of collection content
Promotes and interprets the collections through the use of online tools, classroom instruction, curriculum development, exhibitions and publications
Expands outreach to local, national, and international audiences, including K-12 groups
Provides oversight on the physical storage of map materials, preservation and collection care activities
Participates in grant and external funding activities, including providing leadership to the Mercator Society and cultivating new donors
Serves on relevant committees and task forces
Represents the library in organizations, conferences and consortia related to map collections
Keeps abreast of trends in the cartographic field, digital publishing and scholarly communication
Maintains a personal program of continuous education and professional development and assists other staff members in developing such programs for themselves
Performs related duties as required
Eligibility Requirements:
Undergraduate degree in geography, cartography, or social sciences and Master's degree in related field required
Successfully demonstrated professional knowledge and experience with all cartographic formats in a research library
Extensive background in the history of geographic thought, the history of cartography, digital cartographic production, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Demonstrated knowledge of current practices and trends in collection development especially as related to map collections
Demonstrated knowledge of mapping and GIS software, digital geospatial data, and online mapping products and services
Demonstrated management and supervisory experience, including managing materials budgets
Successfully demonstrated experience in the areas of project management, problem-solving and decision-making in a collaborative and coordinated planning environment
Successfully demonstrated experience with instruction, including classroom teaching and preparation of teaching materials
Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, including successfully demonstrated ability to work effectively with the public, staff and donors
Proficient computer skills, including ArcGIS, QGIS, Photoshop, Freehand, ContentDM, MS Access, MS Excel, Google Maps, Google Earth
Knowlege of programming langueage in Postgre GIS, Visual Basic, Perl, Keyhole Markup Language, XML preferred
Knowledge of the planning and development of exhibitions preferred
