Description
The Director, Corporate Relations creates and executes strategic external communications programs to promote and protect Elsevier’s corporate reputation with global responsibilities, including a strong focus on the the US market. The position leads the communications activities for the Health Sciences division (HS) communications globally, driving corporate communications messaging and tools in addition to overseeing and advising on business unit communications.
Scope of responsibility includes directing strategy, execution and problem-solving for external corporate communications in those areas of global and regional responsibility, including: corporate media relations, issues management, policy communications and acting as a communications counsel and resource for Elsevier senior management in the US.
The Director, Corporate Relations:
•Reports to the Vice President, Global Corporate Relations (US).
•Direct reports: None, but has oversight over the PR agency
•Key internal contacts include: Internal Communications, Group Strategy, Academic Relations & Research, Marketing, Operations, Editors, Library Relations, Legal, and RE Corporate Communications, RE Government Affairs and RE Investor Relations.
Accountability
•Leads the development and implementation of communications programs to build Elsevier’s reputation in areas of strategic importance to the business: demonstrating industry leadership, innovation, customer-focus, and corporate responsibility.
•Develops and implements proactive, strategic media programs that communicate the company's contribution to the scientific, technical and health communities and raises the profile of Elsevier publications and products. Includes developing strategic communications objectives, developing messages, managing executive media campaigns, serving as Elsevier’s representative with mainstream media and (healthcare, science, education, and library) trade press, and story development and placement. Also includes building relationships with 3rd parties and influencers to ensure Elsevier’s participation and credibility on critical issues.
•Responsible for quickly and effectively responding to issues and problems concerning Elsevier’s business. Time zone differences and portfolio responsibility require a high degree of independent and timely action to handle external threats and counsel Elsevier management.
•Responsible for managing public relations agencies with regional and global responsibilities, and ensuring their work is effective, efficient, fully supportive of senior management, and consistent with Elsevier’s communications interests.
•Develops new policies and procedures to ensure accuracy and effectiveness in all external communications. Ensures that all media inquiries are handled effectively.
•Creates, develops and implements new ideas for communicating on behalf of Elsevier through new and innovative media channels, including social media.
•Represents Elsevier Corporate Relations at Editors Conferences, contributes to Editors Update, counsels on communications with Editors.
•Maintains external contacts and information sources to identify potential issues, exposures and opportunities. Supports the VP for crisis and issue related communicationsfor the US and South America. This includes developing briefing materials/messaging, working with spokespeople and resources for actionable communications, and contingency planning in crisis situations. Act as a spokesperson where needed.
•Provides advice and counsel to senior Elsevier executives on dealing with media, policymakers, and external stakeholders.
•Coordinates with Elsevier’s parent company, Reed Elsevier (RE) on issue management, media relations, and corporate responsibility.
•Develops bank of company spokespeople through media training and briefings, and promote as Experts.
•Counsels and trains Elsevier customer-facing staff and senior executives on effective communications, by developing training programs and providing regular counsel.
•Acts as an internal resource/consultant for Elsevier staff, for example, providing input into product media strategies, reviewing press releases.
•Documents and communicates media results, e.g., Monthly Media Review, message scorecard, journalist perceptions.
•Manages public relations agencies in USA as appropriate.
•Travel is required (approx 5-10%).

Qualifications
Qualifications, Skills, Competencies
•Communications professional with strong track record and at least 8 years of external (marketing or PR) communications experience in a corporate or communications agency/consultant setting. Understanding of international media relations, issue communications and government relations.
◦Experience and affinity with healthcare, science/technology, information services, or specialized publishing preferred.
◦Experience with financial communications preferred.
◦Internal communications experience a plus.
•Ability to act independently and decisively to respond to external threats, assessing available information, using appropriate communications practices, and consulting with appropriate senior managers.
•Excellent judgment and composure in a crisis. Ability to identify potential influencers of Elsevier’s business and establish constructive relationships with external stakeholders, including partners, critics, and media on critical and sensitive issues.
•Ability to represent Elsevier effectively and authoritatively in high profile settings.
•A positive, proactive and self-directed individual capable of working at all levels of an organization and across cultures.
•Strong management and leadership skills with ability to build consensus, develop staff capabilities, and manage projects in a matrix organization.
•Must be able to work autonomously and under the constraints of deadlines in differing time zones.
•Ability to handle confidential information and conduct business communications with the highest degree of integrity.
•Experienced in budgeting and resource allocation.
•BA required. Strong written and oral communicator in English. Other languages preferred but not required.
