Columbia University's Center for Digital Research and Scholarship (CDRS), a division of the Columbia University Libraries/Information Services, seeks a full-time Digital Repository Assistant to work within the Repository team and across all of the Center's teams to increase and enhance the collections in Academic Commons, the digital research repository of Columbia and its affiliates. Regular activities of the Repository Assistant include the solicitation, acquisition, upload, and description of scholarly content; oversight and training of work-study employees and interns; and various other content management, quality control, copyright clearance, and communication work as needed. Knowledge of scholarly publishing, information systems, and office productivity software will be useful to the successful applicant.
This position reports to the Digital Repository Manager.
Position Duties:
- Acquiring and processing digital research assets
- Deploying standard metadata schemas and controlled vocabularies to describe scholarly content and facilitate resource discovery and access
- Providing training to and oversight of student employees and interns in the description of acquired content
- Providing quality control and assurance for the repository's digital assets, including descriptive and technical metadata
- Liaising with the other primary areas of activity at CDRS, which include scholarly communication, production, and social media
- Assuming complementary project and duties as assigned by the Digital Repository Manager
Education:
Bachelor's degree or its equivalent, and 0-2 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Additional requirements:
Ability to do careful, detail-oriented work for extended periods of time
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience in using productivity software suites (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Apps)
- Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with electronic publishing and editing workflows, especially in an academic environment
- Experience with XML, metadata schemas, or both
- Advanced degree in a relevant field, such as Library and Information Science
- Experience in Web design, usability, or both
- Experience with communication on social media platforms such as Twitter and Google Plus
