Why Harvest?
- Startup culture, without startup stress. Harvest is a 6-year old, profitable startup. This means you'll experience the fun and excitement of a young, fast-growing company, but there won't be the typical crazy hours and instability of a normal startup. We’re as serious about work as we are about our lives outside of it.
- Small team, big impact. We’re a nimble, efficient and talented team of 22 people. What you will do will have a direct impact on Harvest and our customers’ lives. Your hard work will be seen, appreciated and used by thousands of your peers.
- Challenge yourself. Work with some of the smartest and most interesting people who genuinely care about their craft and demand the highest quality. Aside from the personal satisfaction of a job well done, you will be working with some of the most reputable businesses in the industry.
- Amazing work environment. Great salary, great benefits. Work out of our beautiful NYC office or from your home office. Wherever you are, Harvest will send you an awesome standing desk and a shiny new Mac of your choice.
Who You Are
- You take pride in doing great work and care about the details, big and small.
- You think critically and question everything. Before you start solving a design problem, you examine and challenge the premise and assumptions.
- You like to observe and watch how people (including yourself) interact with their surroundings. You empathize with their frustration, joy, sorrow, confusion and elation.
- You appreciate obvious, simple, quiet and invisible design solutions (over clever, loud, obnoxious, cool and trendy ones).
- You have experience with and are skilled at solving graphical user interface problems. More specifically, you have had a few years of experience designing for the web, and you enjoy solving problems for the web.
- You can follow through on a web design problem from start to finish: identify and understand the problem; conduct user research; sketch and iterate the details of design; specify the fine points and interactions of the design; work with a team to build a prototype; test and iterate; launch, collect and interpret feedback; tweak and improve the design.
- Users first. Your ego last.
A Sample of Tasks and Projects You Might Work On
If you find any of the following unfamiliar or boring, this might not be the right job for you.
- Customer research: Visit a few customers at their office. Talk to the project managers and learn about how Harvest has improved their business, and how we can do better.
- Research and design an experimental new feature: collaborate with a visual designer to tighten and revise the interface, and work with the dev team to come up with a prototype.
- Re-think, re-imagine, and re-design a brand new timesheet that is consistent across mobile, tablet and desktop, while taking advantage of each platform's strengths and weaknesses.
- Explore the differences between touch and click. Conduct a few informal user tests with our team. Think about the speed, hit area, reach and limitations of the two input methods, and how we can take that learning to our products.
- Examine our popular Chosen library and its usability issues. What are its limitations? How can it be improved? How would it work on mobile and how can we bring it to different parts of Harvest?
