Description: |
Position Summary
Provides online and offline bibliographic review and research of
incoming pre- and post- publication data in support of Baker &
Taylor cataloging activities; ensures linkage between B&T’s
cataloging and product/inventory files; produces new cataloging records
by adapting, converting and updating data from an already existing
record and, as needed, applies research and decision making skills to
provide new records consistent with national and Baker & Taylor
standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
(The following statements describe the general nature of work being
performed in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list
of all duties. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by
management):

Create LC and enhanced MARC cataloging records online using Library
of Congress data available from online and offline sources.

Generate new records by adapting and converting data from existing records
-
Supplement bibliographic description with classification and subject headings for easily defined areas
-
Convert LC subject headings to Sears subject headings using appropriate sources
-
Convert Unabridged Dewey classification numbers to Abridged numbers
-
Write descriptive summaries (annotations)
-
Perform bibliographic research using the B&T product file and
cataloging databases and a variety of online bibliographic files
-
Support online and manual research required for all cataloging linkage activities

Control the flow of books/media received from publishers, buying, CLS/ODC, Bridgewater Inventory, service centers, etc.

Handle service center and customer corrections

Update, correct and edit online records and perform database cleanup functions
Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Flag and shelve books based on type of cataloging required

Maintain statistics and control logs for all activities

Assist the manager in special projects, as necessary
Qualifications
-
B.A/B.S.
-
Paraprofessional experience in library environment; knowledge of publishers and publishing
-
Familiarity with online systems, PC’s and automated library systems;
creative writing and communication skills are essential.
