Join us For a Tour of the Huntington Library - April 19, 2008

Join us for a wonderful day trip to the Huntington Library in Pasadena on April 19.  The Huntingtongrounds contain a renowned library, art museum and botanical garden.  A small group of us will travel by van to the library meeting at the Governor Dr/805 park and ride lot at 8:30am.  After a full day, we will return approximately at 6pm.  Space is limited so be sure to sign up quickly.  The cost of transportation is $35 with an additional $20 entrance fee to be paid at the library.

Chapter Meeting, April 10th: Creating a Knowledge Sharing Culture

Creating a Knowledge Sharing Culture: How to Thrive on Change with Patricia Currie

This program introduces the requirements for success and the tools for facilitating collaboration. It focuses on how the information center can take a leadership role to encourage knowledge sharing behavior by modeling best practices, creating organizational taxonomies, and positioning the information center as the educator and connector.

Speaker

Pat Currie started with Dialog in May 1994 and has been a Quantum Coach since the program was reactivated in 2001. Pat earned an MLS from Kent State University, Kent OH. Prior to joining Dialog she worked in corporate libraries in such industries as energy (Columbia Gas System), manufacturing (ABB) and consulting (PriceWaterhouse).

She lives in the Cincinnati area and is an avid skier, golfer and horsewoman.

Wine Steals

Last Wednesday librarians from all walks of life in San Diego met at Wine Steals in Point Loma...just for fun.  (We all know librarians are fun!)  Here are some interesting facts we discovered about each other:

• Between just four of us, we spoke seven languages: Spanish, French, Hebrew, Arabic, Mandarin, Bulgarian and por supuesto/mais oui/razbira se/of course English!
• Six of us attended the same two library schools: Louisiana State University and San Jose State
• Three of us are traveling to New Orleans in less than two months

Chapter Meeting Recap - Power Networking for Introverts

Chapter members turned out in significant numbers last month to learn how to develop strong networking skills to use in developing your business and serving your organization. Speaker Marcy Phelps introduced the topic with a definition of introverts, reminding us that introvert is neither a positive nor a negative term. Many librarians are introverts by nature and this simply reflects the way we process information. In fact, as librarians we have many of the skills that make us very good at building relationships through networking. These skills include: listening, asking the right questions, matching needs with resources, and the desire to help others.

Attendees learned dozens of tips on how to apply these skills to developing the relationships that will best serve our organizations and us. Example tips include:

• Get active in your organization – in this way you get to know people and they get to know you.
• Prepare 2 or 3 questions to start a conversation – try Debra Fine’s book The Fine Art of Small Talk: How to Start a Conversation, Keep it Going, Build Networking Skills, and Leave a Positive Impression.
• Prepare 2 or 3 interesting examples of what you do – this will provide people with a good idea of how you can help them.
• Look for the loner – introduce yourself to someone standing or sitting alone at a networking event.
• Summarize what’s next and follow up – ask for a business card or contact information  and follow up in a way that continues to build on the relationship you have just begun.

The feedback on this program has been very positive, and we all enjoyed lively interaction before, during, and after the meeting.

January Leadership Summit - Louisville, Kentucky

In late January chapter President Kathy Quinn and President Elect Cindy Shamel attended the SLA Leadership Summit in Louisville, KY. 

Kathy (left) brings greetings to the chapter from former chapter member Ty Webb (right).  Ty now serves as a Director of SLA on the Board of Directors.
