SLA-SD February program meeting - Research Tips & Techniques (call for participation!)

Our first SLA-SD program meeting of the year is scheduled for February 18th. By popular demand (based on the recent survey results), we will begin the new year with the topic - "Research Tips and Techniques". We'd like to ask for your participation in this meeting. Send us your favorite publicly available research tool or technique, with a few words about it and why you think it's useful. The Programming Committee will accept the most relevant 6 to 10 submissions. If yours is accepted, you will be asked to present this at the February 18th meeting for 5-10 minutes and provide a one-slide/one page handout to accompany your presentation for the attendees.

Please send your "tip" to Kaitlyn Means ([email protected]). Deadline is Jan 25th. The Program Committee will build the program meeting agenda based on the submissions. If the same idea is submitted by multiple persons, the "first come, first serve" rule will be used to decide on the presenter. All submitters will be notified by February 1st as to whether they will be on the agenda. 

We're hoping for an exciting, interactive, and interesting meeting and look forward to hearing from you.

50 Years of Excellence in Information Service Delivery

On August 6, 1960 SLA Headquarters notified San Diego specialized librarians of authorization for a local chapter.  W. Roy Holleman with Scripps Institute of Oceanography served as the chapter's first president.

This year the chapter will mark its 50th Anniversary.  The 50th Anniversary Team has already formed and begun work on when and how to celebrate. 

The team is lead by Bobbi Weaver of the California Western School of Law.  Members include Daria DeCooman of Elsevier, Elizabeth Grossman of Qualcomm, Grace Viola of Latham & Watkins, Michelle Frost of Grant Thornton, and Martha McPhail of SDSU.

If you have any comments, suggestions, or history to share, contact the team.  Stay tuned for news of anniversary plans.

In the meantime, take advantage of your bragging rights.  You are a member of an historic organization with a long time track record for providing professional information services to organizations throughout San Diego County and for providing its members with career building professional development opportunities.

Budget Committee Begins Work

Past President Cindy Shamel will chair the committee charged with developing a Chapter Budget for 2010.  Members include President Elect Britt Mueller and most recent Past President Kathy Quinn.  President Bobbi Weaver and Treasurer Adele Barsh will advise.

The Committee will develop the assumptions upon which to base the budget as well as propose new policies to guide future budget decisions.

Any Chapter members interested in the work of this committee should contact Cindy Shamel.  Your input is welcomed.

Free Technology Training On Demand

Did you know that SLA offers its members free access to technology training?  Through the SLA subscription to Atomic Learning we can access software training tutorials on-demand.  Atomic Learning offers tutorials on Access, Acrobat, ActivStudio, Blackboard, Dreamweaver, Endnote, Excel, FileMaker, Firefox, Flash, GIMP, Google Docs, OpenOffice, Publisher, Twitter, and Word - just to name a few.  Many tutorials are closed captioned.
