OVERVIEW:
Social media is changing society. Facebook is due to hit 600m
users this year, and more than 4 million people access Twitter on their mobile
phones, a jump of 347% over last year. * Join us at the beautiful USD
campus for a Saturday morning of questions and answers about the social,
ethical and legal issues of this new form of information consumption. Our
featured speaker, Dr. Michael Kalichman, Director of USCD’s Research Ethics
Program, will discuss issues of privacy and personal control in relation to
social media and search engines. Who is doing the filtering and creating
the algorithms? Who is watching us? To what extent does the invdividual
or company have control over what is viewed by the public? What
rights and responsibilities do individuals and companies have regarding the use
of social media?
We’ll follow Dr. Kalichman’s talk with a presentation on the terms and
conditions of social media by Associate Professor of Law Julie
Cromer-Young, Director for the Center for Law, Technology and
Communications at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. We’ll
also discuss the legal issues of social media in the workplace from the
perspective of corporate counsel.
We’ll finish with a panel discussion of
current issues of social media as it affects librarians and information
professionals.
