We've made the big leagues! SLA PR Director Cara Schatz has published the San Diego Chapter news as a post on the national SLA Blog:  San Diego Chapter Celebrating 50th Anniversary in 2010.

Breaking news - County Supervisor Greg Cox will help celebrate SLA-SD's 50th anniversary

I'm excited to announce that Supervisor Greg Cox is coming to the 50th Anniversary Party this Saturday.

He will present a proclamation honoring the Chapter.

Supervisor Cox represents the 1st District, which stretches from the U.S. -Mexico border to Pacific Beach and includes the Corvette Diner where the celebration will be held.

It's rumored that Supervisor Cox is a whiz at San Diego trivia. He's been an elected official in the county for more than three decades - first as a council member and mayor of Chula Vista, and since 1995 as a member of the San Diego County board of Supervisors. So if there are local history questions in the trivia contest, he might be hard to beat.

Introducing SLA-SD's new Chapter Archivist!

I'm delighted to announce that Marisela LaPlante has volunteered to serve as our new Chapter Archivist, taking over the duration of my term. Marisela is a San Jose State graduate with archival course work experience. Please contact her if you have any chapter-related documents that she can place in the archives, including officer correspondence, meeting minutes, financial records, program handouts, etc. If you have any questions about what sort of materials should be archived, Marisela will be able to answer them.

Sourcing authors for articles will be a key responsibility, as is writing original content. Priority will be given to candidates with experience in higher education or government. Role Description

Investigates and ensures implementation of solutions to better facilitate the customer groups’ access to data and information in the absence of existing systems, providing the holistic view required.  Knowledgable about informatics tools to support Pfizer La Jolla’s drug discovery groups for Oncology and Vaccines Research.  Reviews existing technology and applications for their potential to increase productivity for the customer groups through enhanced access to data and information.  Utilizes standardized information tools such as STN, Dialog, IDDB, PubMed, to locate relevant information for customers.  Proactively advises on how technology can be combined and/or adjusted in order to meet the customers need for rapid and accurate access to clinical, competitor, or scientific data or information.  Works closely with local and global counterparts to understand new applications and technical solutions which may require working as a project team member through requirements gathering, design and post deployment phases.

All job holders will be required to align to more than one business line over time so that knowledge is shared and cross-functional business and technical skills are achieved in order to ensure continuity of service across the business lines.

Thank you for making our book drive a success!

A big, big thank you to everyone who helped make our book drive in partnership with Words Alive a huge success!  Thanks to all of you, we were able to collect a whopping total of...drumroll please...645 books!!  (With a few more still rolling in!)  In fact, Words Alive has informed us that this was one of their most successful book drives of the year!

Our happy hour on April 29 offered a fun way to bring all of the books together and wrap up the project.

We would especially like to thank our collection box hosts:  Grace Viola, Peggy Makie, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Michele Wyngard, Robin Dodds Lang, Ali Herndon Ortega, and Jessica Cubeta.  And congratulations to Peggy Makie for collecting the most books!  For this, she earned a $25 Better World Books gift certificate!

The new and gently used children's books gathered through all of your hard work and generosity will be used to build a lending library at a local Childhood Development Center and to help spread the love of reading to many of Words Alive's other program sites.

If you still have books to donate, it's not too late!  You can drop them off M-F, 8:30 am-5 pm, at the Words Alive offices:
