I know many of you have been waiting with baited breath for me to make the announcement of the topic I will be tackling during the 2011 iteration of SE101. Well, wait no longer! The topic, after thundrous (well, actually, less than thundrous) demand from our session reviews will be Materials Science. Mary Frances actually reviewed this topic in '06, but it was requested more than any other on the returned review, so there you go.
What is materials science, you may ask, well, according to Wikipedia, it is "an interdisciplinary field involving the properties of matter and its applications to various areas of science and engineering. This scientific field investigates the relationship between the structure of materials at atomic or molecular scales and their macroscopic properties. It incorporates elements of applied physics and chemistry. With significant media attention focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology in recent years, materials science has been propelled to the forefront at many universities. It is also an important part of forensic engineering and failure analysis. Materials science also deals with fundamental properties and characteristics of materials." What are your favorite sites and resources for materials science? What do you want me to cover at SLA 2011 in Philly? Just leave a comment and let me know! I'll be chiming in here with more on the topic as we move closer and closer to the annual conference.--JEM
