Library Buzz A Big Hit Last Night

SLA's first Library Buzz session (as part to the Alliance Virtual Library programs) last night was a big hit. Scott Brown, owner and founder of Social Information Group, spoke about "Putting Social to Work".

The session was very well attended - over 30 attendees from a variety of information backgrounds - academic, public, corporate, students. There was a lot of energy and Scott made the session very interactive which allowed us all to learn from Scott as well as from each other - it was fabulous!

SLA in SL Looking for a Few Good Sponsors

SLA in Second Life - Phase 2
The SLA in Virtual World Advisory Council has recommended that SLA revamp the association's current space that is available today in Second Life. We would like to create a warm, welcoming and informative space for SLA members and others interested in SLA and the information world to collaborate, learn about SLA, have events/chats and share information and knowledge.

To accomplish this next phase of SLA in Second Life, we would like to brand the space and to establish some foundational elements that will allow us to create additional features over time in a consistent and immersive way. The foundational elements include:

• Creating an enhanced space with various ways to learn about SLA;
• Revamping the area and meeting spaces to have both open and closed forums: open meeting spaces, a few meeting rooms, general open space, paths to walk around the space and learn about SLA, exhibits in one place, calendar of events, SLA branding
• Creating a timeline of SLA in SL (leveraging the traveling exhibit and content from the SLA site)
• Providing information on SLA's virtual worlds strategy and a link to the SLA in VW strategy document on the wiki site
• Feeding in the SLA Twitter stream and blog entries into the SLA Second Life space; providing dynamic information and ways to connect with SLA (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Blogs)
• Providing a feedback board so folks can leave questions or ideas on overall topics and on specific topics, such as the alignment initiative
• Establishing a ClickU space for information on ClickU, and for future ClickU development
• Creating SLA video displays

We are raising $5000.00 to provide these basic features and functionality and are asking for sponsorship for key information partners and SLA divisions and chapters. Once these basics are created, we will move forward from there based on the needs of and input from the members and divisions and look to further enhancements to prepare for possible 2010 activity in Second Life.
 
As a sponsor of this phase of SLA in Second Life we will be providing thanks and recognition by offering the following (please sponsor what amount you can):

• Organization / division logos/links on a walkway and/or signage in the space
• If sponsoring the space, the sponsoring organization may come and speak about their products, division or unit and/or when we hold events
• We will provide an intro to Second Life session for your team if you would like
• Special avatar t-shirts or other items to give away with the sponsor logo  
• Links to the the organization / division from Second Life with a notecard with additional information (we will work with the right people to have it say what you would like)
• First opportunity to be a sponsor and get involved in any 2010 conference work for SLA in Second Life

Library Buzz: Putting Social to Work: Real-Life Examples of Organizations and Info Pros Using Social Networking Tools

Social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others can be fun to use, but how are organizations and information professionals actually using them to connect, share and find information effectively? How do they find the time to do it? In this session we will look at the real-life practical applications of social networking tools, both inside and outside of the information organization. You'll see real examples, and we'll discuss issues and best practices around security, privacy and implementation.

Scott Brown recently started an independent information practice, Social Information Group, dedicated to helping individuals and organizations effectively use social networking tools for information sharing, networking and marketing. For the previous nine years he was a Senior Information Specialist with Digital Libraries & Research, the library and information organization at Sun Microsystems. He has provided training in Second Life and in Real Life to Sun employees and other firms to help them get started in virtual worlds. He received his MLIS from San Jose State University in 1999. He is a past President of RMSLA, and is currently Past Chair and 2009 planner for the Competitive Intelligence Division of SLA. He is also currently pursuing a Masters in Counseling through Regis University in Denver. An exhibit on female cookbook authors in Britain and America, sponsored by Caledon Cuisine. This exhibit takes the viewer from the mid-Eighteenth to the early Twentieth century.  Beginning with the 1747 "Art of Cookery" by Hannah Glasse (who never said "first catch your hare," although that's what she's famous for), and the 1796 "American Cookery" by Amelia Simmons ("An American Orphan") we'll explore the careers and publishing of such figures as Elizabeth Raffald and Lydia Maria Child, ending up with the work of Isabella Beeton and Fannie Farmer.  Come discuss old cookery books and their intriguing authors with curators Eleanor Anderton, EppieBlack Wheatcliffe, and JJ Drinkwater

Folklorist Afsenah Metaluna will guide us in a new exploration each month; with illustrative stories and her own commentary she'll expose to our understanding some facet of the rich and varied folklore of the British Isles. These lectures will feature brave heroics and wonder tales from the Celtic regions, Welsh lore including the tales of Arthur and Merlin, stories of the wise and the uncanny from Scotland, and folklore from England comprised of local legends that combine references to beliefs and customs and aspects of daily life, particularly rural life as well as the English ballads and broadsides, which have a strong tradition of their own.
This month, we'll hear stories of the "Jack Tales" variety, where a young hero (often the supposedly foolish youngest son) makes his way in the world by being quick-witted, resourceful, and respectful or courteous to the powers of nature or magic.

Seeking Volunteers for Upcoming Stepping Into... Series

You are invited to participate in planning a series of Stepping Into conferences for this coming fall
and spring.  We will meet on Innovation Info Island on Thursday August 6 at 8 am sl.  Proceeds from
these conferences go to supporting islands and activities in Second Life for the Alliance Virtual Library.
As you know, I have been transferring many of these islands to other groups; however I still have expenses for islands like Info Island, Info International, etc. through this year.  In October, we will have stepping into history; in November stepping into science; in January stepping into literature; and in March stepping into medicine.  Participating in these conferences is a great experience and you get free registration. Let me  know if you are interested and I hope you can come to the initial planning meeting on August 6.

Attention all those who consider themselves innovators!

The Alliance Virtual Library is preparing to launch Innovation Infoisland, a sim specifically designed as a base for those with the time and ideas -  but perhaps not the infrastructure -  for experimenting and launching new ideas.

Alliance Virtual Library is aware that lack of access to space and prims can sometimes limit the exploration of new ideas. The intent of Innovation Infoisland is to support and encourage the development of innovations and provide a showcase for the display of projects with application to educational or library use.

Parcels of varrying sizes are available at no cost to individuals looking for a place to work and display innovative projects  This lovely sim will also be available for events.

Some interior space, in buildings styled after the French Quarter of New Oreleans, is also available. The size of the parcel and the prim allowances vary depending on the needs of the project.

Completed projects will be on display at the sim for up to six months. A separate exhibit space will be available for the display of Cool Tools.

Innovators will be encouraged to network and share, and will have access to an airy patio cafe.

Sales will not be allowed.  Parcels are not to serve as living or retail space.

Rules and restrictions are few, in keeping with the role of the sim as a place for experimentation, exploration and innovation.

Second Life Community Convention Education Track Proposal Deadline

SLCC09 (Second Life Community Convention 2009 Education Track Propsoal Deadline is July 17.

The Convention will take place in San Francisco, August 13-15, 2009.

Unlike in previous years, the Education Track will be formally structured into three themes occurring at specific times. Those being:

1. Celebratory Membership: Tell us your story. What did you or your organization do well over the past 12-18 months. The focus is on best practices and how, with your help, the community at large has benefited. Maybe it was a teaching practice or student learning achievement, marketing, communications. Anything is fair game that showcases the best of what what your organization has done.
2. Funtional Requirement: Tell us what you need. What would make your Second Life better over the next 12-18 months. The focus is on uncovering limitations and how, with the community’s involvement, the programs SL Educators offer could be taken up to the next level. Maybe it is the antithesis of best practices or maybe a research study that needs to be done. Anything is fair game that showcases where you envision education in Second Life going over the next 12-18 months
3. Core Competency and Capability: Tell us what is out there. What tools, techniques, networks, opportunities are available, or soon to be available, that people should know about. The focus is on discovery of those support products, services, and practices which will raise the bar on Education in Second Life. Maybe its a new widget or support group, or something totally unique that your organization is hoping to make available. Anything is fair game that showcases supporting infrastructure available to the SL Community as a whole.

The overall objective of the SLCC Education Track is to develop a concept map which will be published at the end of the conference to those people in attendance. This concept map will serve as a roadmap for opportunities and challenges which will raise the bar on education in Second Life. It will help provide your organization with a ton of new ideas, support, and networking opportunities for the coming year.

The SLCC Education Committee is looking for the following proposal types to be received on or before Friday July 17th at 23:59SLT.

1. Stand-up Presentation or academic paper (30 minutes)
2. Round Table (90 minutes)
3. Workshop (30, 60, or 90 minutes)
4. Demonstration (30, 60, or 90 minutes)

Each session should be characterized by having some type of participatory interactive component. Don’t worry if you want to submit something that doesn’t have that already built in as the SLCC Education Committee will help you develop an interactive component leading up to the conference.

David Rumsey Map Collection--Available in RL and SL

The David Rumsey Map Collection began nearly 20 years ago. The collection "focuses primarily on cartography of the Americas from the 18th and 19th centuries, but also has maps of the World, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. The collection includes atlases, globes, school geographies, books, maritime charts, and a variety of separate maps, including pocket, wall, children's and manuscript.

Digitization of the project began in 1997. The project was undertaken for numerous reasons: Maps are uniquely suitable to high-resolution scanning because they contain large amounts of detailed information, which can be seen more readily when the viewer is able to zoom in and enlarge images on a computer screen. Viewed over the Internet, rare maps become available to those who previously had no access to such collections or were not aware of the maps' existence. In their original form, maps and atlases can be large, delicate, and unwieldy. Digitization increases their accessibility, and combined with an online catalog allows the viewer a variety of ways to search the collection. "

The site also offers a link to get into Second Life.  It begins with the capability to create a Second Life avatar.  The SLURL is also available.  There is even a SLURL to run your Second Life Orientation through the David Ramsey collection.
