Virtual Worlds Conferences--Yoga Anyone?

While Googling for Virtual Worlds Conferences, I came across the Virtual World Yoga and Meditation Conference scheduled for February 8-12, 2011.  It includes over 75 workshops, taught by 60 teachers in 5 days.  This year's theme is "Yoga, Meditation and the Philosopher's Stone".  Registration is $295  Topics range from Laughter Yoga to variety of sessions on how to find balance and meaning in your life.

After the frenetic pace of attending a library conference (virtual or real), a Yoga conference sounds nice.

 

Federal Consortium for Virtual World Conference Registration Now Open

1)      Proposals are due by February 7 for workshops, government poster sessions and vendor participation.  Don’t forget to send in your proposal ASAP for consideration!

The agenda is shaping up for the 4^th Annual Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds Conference 2011, scheduled for May 11-13! The keynote speakers are great this year!  May 11 is a day of workshops, and the main conference takes place on the 12^th-13^th.  Our theme for this year’s conference is: Headed for the Future. As we get closer to the event, more and more information will be posted on the web site For starters, each month until the conference, a new keynote speaker will be featured on our homepage. Get a sneak peek at who’s coming, what they’re about, and what they plan to discuss.  We will also start posting detailed agenda information so that you can begin to plan how you would like to spend your time while at the conference.

In the meantime, here are a few important reminders and updates to keep in mind:

Proposals

There’s still time to submit a proposal for a workshop or for the vendor fair.  Spaces are filling up, so act now.

Due dates to remember:

Proposal deadline: February 7, 2011. 

Notification of acceptance: NLT March 14, 2011. 

Registration

Registration is now open. You can register for workshops, the two-day conference or both!  Whether you plan to attend on campus, through video stream or virtual world, you will need to register.  Please visit http://www.ndu.edu/iCollege/fcvw/registration.html to register today. Please register even if you plan to attend virtually through the webstream or inworld.  Cost is $0.  Directions for registering are on the website.

DoD Uses Virtual Worlds to Help Vets Treat Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome

"The Defense Department is using virtual-world interactivity to educate and help warfighters and others who are reluctant to seek more direct care to deal with post-traumatic stress, said an official at the National Center for Telehealth and Technology, also known as “T2.”

Located in Second LIfe, T2 provides "an environment that lets people learn by doing, rather than reading text and watching videos on two-dimensional websites," Kevin Holloway, the psychologist who led T2's virtual-world development, said in a statement. "They can learn something new each time they visit."

Virtual Texas Will Open Soon

Save the date!  Virtual Texas will open soon with a live tour of Antiquity, Texas on:

Feb. 3, 2011
Time:  6-8pm SLT

Virtual Texas, an exhibit at the Community Virtual Library on Info Island, is sponsored by the Texas Library Association SL Community Group.  Come explore virtual resources about Texas and a replica of the Alamo, the Texas Capitol, and other Texas landmarks.

The tour will begin at the exhibit (SLurl below) and end with a dance on Antiquity, Texas.
