The 55th Military Libraries Workshop (MLW) with the theme "Riding the Information Wave" will focus on current topics of benefit to all military libraries, their management and their customers. These topics include social media analysis; open source integrated library systems; research that helps define threats in Mexico and Latin America; and resources for helping wounded warriors. Over 50 vendors with the latest in information content and technology will showcase their products and will be available for individual consultation.
WHERE : MLW 2011 will be held at the downtown Norfolk Waterside Marriott, 235 East Main St, Norfolk, VA 23510. The host agency is the Joint Forces Staff College of National Defense University.
Monday, Dec 5 - Pre-Workshop Training and military service meetings; vendor exhibits (Dec 5-7) Tuesday-Thursday, Dec 6-8 - Main Training Workshop Friday, Dec 9 - Post Workshop military facilities/history tours
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The over-arching focus of this five day workshop will appeal to a broad array of communities, including librarians, information and open source professionals, analysts/scientists/researchers and technologists both managerial and practicing - anyone who is concerned with providing the best content resources, information services, and supporting technology to ensure our military forces, their families, and those who support them get the information they need. Anyone who supports warfighters and their families would benefit from attending the MLW 2011 Workshop.
EXPERTISE: Invited and confirmed speakers have been chosen for their
expertise in the subject matter to be addressed.
MONDAY, DEC 5, FOCUS: Hands-on pre-workshop training will provide extended sessions on "Denial and Deception in Social Networking Sites;"
"Veteran's History Project-Preserving Military History-Interviewing Techniques; and "DTIC Boot Camp-How to Use the Resources of the Defense Technical Information Center." DTIC Boot Camp will be especially useful for qualified non-librarian attendees not too familiar with DTIC resources. Services meetings bring together the information professionals who support the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.
Monday evening will be your first opportunity to visit and interact with the vendors.
TUESDAY, DEC 6, FOCUS: The focus on Tuesday is more futuristic with a keynote presentation on "Information Overload;" "Open Source Library Systems and Related Technologies;" and the ever-popular vendor showcase where exhibitors highlight their new products and services. Tuesday ends with a look back at how history might inform the future with a presentation and tour of the MacArthur Memorial Museum and Archives.
WEDNESDAY, DEC 7, FOCUS: Wednesday's focus is practical and focused on sessions that can provide immediate take-aways for all attendees.
"Managing Your Library's Managers," " Resources for Helping Wounded Warriors," "Diplopedia-An Information Model," and "Organizing Your Work, Home and Personal Life" will all discuss some practical and innovative methods that can be put to immediate use by attendees.
THURSDAY, DEC 8, FOCUS: On Thursday, the workshop features presentations on topics that will greatly expand our "tool kits," such as how libraries can better partner with IT Departments," "Coast Guard Missions and Information Resources," "Threats on Our Borders: Mexico and Latin American Issues," and "Future Ready" by SLA president Cindy Romaine.
